LINDSAY CLANCY CASE: Clinical & Psycho-Legal Perspective: Beyond Judgment
This case has affected me deeply, both as a clinical social worker and as a mother.
It has made me reflect on how we can seek to understand an unimaginable tragedy without allowing understanding to become judgement.
Cora, Dawson and Callan must remain at the centre. Their lives, vulnerability and need for protection should never be lost within the legal and psychiatric debate.
At the same time, understanding Lindsayโs mental state is essential to the question of criminal responsibility.
Was she severely depressed and suicidal while retaining an understanding of reality, or did psychiatric illness fundamentally distort her perception to the point where killing her children was experienced as an act of protection?
These are questions that require evidence, clinical understanding and compassion. Not stigma or hindsight.
As a professional, this case has reinforced the importance of early recognition, thorough risk assessment, continuity of care and family support when severe mental-health deterioration occurs.
As a mother, it has reminded me that mental illness is not always visible from the outside.
I am following this case not to excuse or condemn, but to learn, raise awareness and ask what we can do differently to protect vulnerable parents and children.
