Menopause can affect far more than your menstrual cycle. Hot flushes, disrupted sleep, mood changes, brain fog, va**nal dryness and reduced libido may all affect daily life.

You don’t have to suffer in silence. Speak to your gynaecologist about your symptoms, possible causes and suitable management options.

Symptoms vary from person to person and may also be linked to other health conditions, so proper medical assessment is important.

🩸 What is menstrual fluid actually made of?

During menstruation, falling progesterone and oestrogen levels trigger breakdown and shedding of the functional layer of the endometrium, the lining of the uterus. What leaves the va**na is therefore a mixture rather than simply blood.

🧫 It includes:

Blood — primarily from blood vessels within the shedding endometrium.

Endometrial tissue and cells — fragments and cells from the uterine lining. Researchers can actually isolate viable endometrial cells from menstrual fluid.

Tissue fluid — fluid released from the endometrium. An older quantitative study found that blood accounted for an average of about 36% of total menstrual discharge, although this varied enormously between individuals.

Cervical mucus and va**nal secretions — these mix with menstrual material as it travels through the cervix and va**na.

Immune cells — including specialised populations of T cells, NK cells, neutrophils and other immune cells involved in the local inflammatory and repair processes associated with menstruation.

Proteins, enzymes, cytokines and other signalling molecules — menstrual fluid has a molecular profile distinct from ordinary circulating blood.
Normal va**nal microorganisms — because the fluid passes through the va**nal environment, its microbial content can include organisms that normally live there.

🚩 High blood pressure during pregnancy is a BIIIIG red flag 🚩

🔴 Sometimes there may be few noticeable symptoms, yet hypertension can become serious for both mom and baby.

🔴 It may affect the mother’s organs and the function of the placenta, and in some cases can develop into pre-eclampsia.

🔴 If severe, complications can include restricted baby growth, premature delivery,
placental abruption, seizures or stroke.

✅️ If you do regular antenatal visits your Gynae can monitor your blood pressure and identify BP changes early.

💡 Many women worry that using birth control could make it harder to fall pregnant in the future. However for most forms of contraception, this isn't the case.

Fertility usually returns after birth control stops (with exception of the contraceptive injection, which may cause a temporary delay before ovulation resumes.)

If you're planning a pregnancy or have questions about your fertility, speak to your gynaecologist for advice that's tailored to your individual health.

🤰🏾 Normal morning sickness:

Nausea and occasional vomiting are common in pregnancy.
You can usually still drink fluids, eat small amounts and continue with most daily activities.

🤢 When it might be hyperemesis gravidarum:

You cannot keep fluids or food down.
You are losing weight, urinating less, feeling dizzy or becoming too weak to manage daily tasks.

🤧 Why should it not be ignored?

Severe vomiting can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and poor nutrition.
Without treatment, it can affect both your health and your pregnancy.
It’s important to seek help early. Don’t need to wait until you are severely dehydrated.

Contact Dr Maphikana if your symptoms are stopping you from functioning normally.

🐣 What does age do to your egg supply?

You are born with a finite number of eggs, and this ovarian reserve naturally decreases with age.Fertility is generally highest in the 20s and early 30s, with the decline becoming more noticeable during the mid-to-late 30s.

🧸 What about your egg quality?

Age also affects the likelihood of an egg having the correct number of chromosomes. As chromosomal abnormalities become more common with age, it can become more difficult to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy.

🚼 So does fertility suddenly turn off?

No.There isn’t a switch that suddenly flips at a certain age. Fertility declines gradually, and every woman’s reproductive situation is different.

🐤 So when should you seek help?

It’s generally recommend a fertility evaluation after:
Under 35: 12 months of trying
35 or older: 6 months of trying
Over 40: Consider speaking to your OBGYN sooner.

Your age is only one part of your fertility story.

🤰🏾Every pregnancy is different, so your ideal timing should always be discussed with your doctor. However it’s advised to wait at least 18–24 months before becoming pregnant again. This gives your body
time to recover and is associated with the lowest overall risk for both mother and baby.

👩🏽‍🍼 Why wait? Pregnancy places significant demands on your body. Waiting allows time for iron and nutrient stores to recover, your uterus and pelvic floor to heal and your hormones to stabilise.

👶🏾 The ideal timing may differ if you’re over 35 years old, if you’ve had a Caesarean section, had complications with a previous pregnancy or other underlying medical conditions.

🐣 Planning your next pregnancy? If you're thinking about growing your family, consult Dr Maphikana for personalised advice before trying to conceive.
