Dementia Symptoms

The following list is a specialized range of symptoms that will be useful as you prepare your observations and concerns for your doctor’s appointment for your loved ones:
• Progressive memory loss
• An inability to concentrate
• A decrease in problem-solving and judgment capabilities
• Confusion
• Hallucinations and delusions
• Altered sensation or perception
• Agnosia: Impaired recognition of objects, people, and/or senses
• Altered sleep patterns
• Motor system impairment
o Apraxia: Impaired skilled motor function
Inability to reproduce numerical figures
Inability to mimic hand positions
Inability to get dressed
o Gait changes
o Inappropriate movements
• Disorientation
o Person, place, time disorientation
o Visual-spatial disorientation
o Inability to interpret environmental cues
• Specific disorders of problem-solving or learning
o Inability to generalize
o Loss of abstract thinking
o Impaired calculating ability
o Inability to learn
• Memory deficit
o Short-term memory problems
o Long-term memory problems
• Aphasia, or impaired language ability
o Inability to comprehend speech
o Inability to read
o Inability to write
o Inability to speak
o Inability to form words
o Inability to name objects
o Poor enunciation
o Inappropriate speech; inappropriate language or verbal gibberish
o Inability to repeat a phrase; alternatively, the persistent repetition of phrases
• Personality changes
o Irritability

o Indecisiveness
o Self-centeredness
o Inflexibility
o No observable mood (flat affect)
o Inappropriate mood or behavior
o Withdrawal from social interaction
o Inability to function or interact in social or personal situations
o Inability to maintain employment
o Decreased ability to care for oneself
o Decreased interest in daily living activities
o Lack of spontaneity
Additional symptoms associated with the late stage of this disease:
• Difficulty swallowing
