A little business lesson I have learnt far too late: businesses are allowed to have boundaries too.
As women, we are constantly encouraged to know our worth in relationships. Set standards. Have boundaries. Do not accept less than we deserve...
Yet somehow, in business, we forget all of that.
We apologise for our prices. We over-explain increases. We give discounts we cannot afford. We bend policies because we do not want to disappoint people. And when someone questions our value, suddenly we start questioning it too.
I am done doing that!
Recently, we announced our first fee increase in two years, after many years of very few increases. And while these decisions are never comfortable, one email I received two days ago gave me something of a lightbulb moment...
Why do we, as business owners, feel the need to apologise for or justify the very decisions necessary to keep our businesses healthy and sustainable?
We have always made a conscious effort to keep our fees as accessible as possible. In fact, they remain lower than many private fitness facilities in our area, despite offering a specialised, highly personalised service that is unique in its scope.
But you know what?! Accessibility should never be mistaken for our service being worth less.
I studied for 9 years in total and have spent the past 17 continuously building the business, my knowledge, skills and experience. I am a registered Exercise and Nutrition Specialist, backed by an incredible team who genuinely care about every person we serve.
What people see from the outside is “a gym”.
What they do not see are the years of study, continued education, research, programming, planning and exercise science behind what we do.
They do not see the technology behind every member’s personalised online gym profile, or the administration, equipment, maintenance, improvements, salaries, insurance, rent, utilities and countless hours of work that keep everything running behind the scenes.
And for many of our clients, what we provide is far more than simply a gym or a “luxury”. We have walked alongside clients through injuries, health struggles, pregnancies, weight loss, strength gains, confidence battles and incredibly difficult seasons of life. We have watched people arrive feeling defeated and slowly rediscover their strength, confidence and what their bodies are capable of.
What we provide matters!
And to me and my family, this business is certainly not a “luxury” either. It is a significant part of our lives and something we have quite literally built our lives around. It represents years of hard work, dedication and countless hours. My children have grown up alongside it. My husband has poured countless hours into it because he knows what it means to me. As a family, we have shared every challenge, milestone and success along the way.
Like every business, our costs increase. And sometimes our fees therefore have to increase too.
And I have finally realised...
Increasing our prices when necessary does not mean we care less about our clients. It means we care enough about what we have built, and the people who rely on us, to ensure it remains sustainable and is still here to serve them tomorrow.
We will always strive to offer incredible value. We will always treat people with kindness and respect. And we will always remain as accessible as we reasonably can.
But accessibility does not mean undervaluing ourselves! Kindness does not mean having no boundaries! And caring about our clients does not mean our business must absorb ever-increasing costs so that someone else never has to pay more!
Our business is allowed to have boundaries too.
And perhaps more women in business need to hear that, because I speak from experience when I say this...
Constantly allowing your value to be questioned, your boundaries to be pushed and your passion to be taken advantage of will eventually take its toll.
It can slowly kill your passion and, perhaps saddest of all, turn what began as a genuine calling to help people into something you begin to resent.
Do not wait until you reach that point.
Protecting your boundaries is not only about protecting your business. Sometimes, it is about protecting the passion that made you build it in the first place.
KNOW YOUR WORTH. SET YOUR BOUNDARIES. BELIEVE IN THE VALUE YOU BRING.
Not only in business, but personally too...
Because perhaps, at the end of the day, one simply stems from the other...
