Baby Communication Week: Seeing the Baby๐ฑ
Long before babies say their first word, they are already communicating. Through their body language, facial expressions, eye contact, and even the way they settle or startle, every baby is constantly telling us something about how they feel and what they need.
"Seeing the baby" means three things:
๐ Recognising their cues; learning to read what their behaviour is actually saying
๐ค Empathising; genuinely trying to understand the world from their perspective
โจ Honouring their individuality; each baby arrives with their own personality, temperament, and strengths
This can be harder than it sounds. Task-focused care, technology, diagnoses, and even grief or trauma can sometimes make it difficult for parents and caregivers to truly see the baby in front of them. That's exactly what this week explores; not with judgment, but with practical tools and compassion.
For parents: you don't need to have everything figured out. Getting to know your baby is a gradual, unfolding process โ and noticing them specifically is where it begins. ๐ฉท
For my fellow healthcare professionals, the Brazelton Centre UK has released two free downloadable guides this week, designed for both parents and practitioners. Well worth pinning up in your rooms.
