Once the funeral is over, most families find themselves facing a second wave of practicalities. Accounts to close, policies to claim, legal processes to follow. It tends to arrive at exactly the point when energy is at its lowest.
Knowing what to expect can make that period more manageable. Generally, the process involves notifying relevant institutions of the passing, obtaining certified copies of the death certificate, following the instructions in the Will if one exists, and working with an executor to wind up the estate. Where there is no Will, the estate is handled under intestate succession laws.
It is a practical process, but it carries its own weight. Be patient with yourself as you work through it, and give yourself permission to take it one step at a time.
