As a Medical Doctor who has struggled with her weight since childhood, injectable weight loss therapy has been absolutely life changing, not just for me but for the patients I have the privilege of serving. For those who have never struggled with weight, pushing the “eat less, move more” agenda, you won’t get this. And that is okay. There are parts of your journey that I don’t understand. You won’t understand how disheartening it is to run 21km races and still gain weight, to be on calorie restricting diets, and not see a gram or cm difference. That’s (a part of) my story. Some of my patients are semi-pro athletes, hyroxers, cross fitters and some of the most hard working people I know. The obesity struggle is not merely one of a poor diet, poor lifestyle choices and gluttony- genetics, family history, and stress all have their part to play. What I find discouraging is the misinformation spread in this space- the muscle mass loss, the risk of osteoporosis and potential blindness (which I have yet to see a study on). When used incorrectly, these medications can reduce your muscle mass (so does lethargy & ageing). They can increase your risk of osteoporosis (so does menopause). But when done correctly- in conjunction with a doctor, dietician and personal trainer- they are absolutely life changing.
