👁️💙 WORLD RETINA DAY – 27 SEPTEMBER
Your retina is the window between your eyes and your brain.
The retina is a delicate layer of nerve tissue at the back of your eye. It captures light and converts it into signals that are sent to the brain, allowing us to see the world around us.
Today, on World Retina Day, we raise awareness of the importance of looking after this vital part of your vision.
Retinal conditions can affect people of all ages and include conditions such as:
🔹 Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
🔹 Diabetic retinopathy
🔹 Retinal detachments
🔹 Retinitis pigmentosa and other inherited retinal diseases
🔹 Macular conditions
🔹 Retinal changes associated with high myopia
Some retinal diseases can develop without obvious symptoms in the early stages. This is why regular comprehensive eye examinations are so important — particularly if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, a strong family history of eye disease, or high levels of myopia.
🚨 Don't ignore sudden changes in your vision.
Flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow or curtain across your vision, or sudden loss/distortion of vision can require urgent assessment.
💙 Healthy eyes aren't just about seeing clearly — they're about protecting your sight for the future.
This World Retina Day, take a moment to prioritise your retinal health.
