We put Dr Ulandi in the hot seat and asked her top breeds. Here is her list:

Her top picks:
🐾Domestic Shorthair Cats: She has two of her own and they are full of personality. They chat to her when they want their food and also enjoy going on walks.
🐾 Labradors: The biggest balls of love going. Eternal puppies no matter how old they get.
🐾 Toy Pomeranians: A surprise entry! Dr Ulandi never thought a small breed would make her list, until she adopted one. He has completely stolen her heart and makes her smile every single day!

Clearly the best pets come in all shapes and sizes. What's your favourite breed? Let us know below!

Are you still attaching your dog's lead directly to their collar for walks? 🦮

While collars are essential for holding ID tags, using them as the primary point of steering on a walk can cause serious physical damage.

When a dog pulls against a collar, all that force is directed straight into their neck, risking severe bruising, whiplash, or even a collapsed trachea (windpipe) - a particularly high risk for smaller breeds.

Switching to a well-fitted harness changes the entire dynamic of your daily walk.

Why a harness is the better choice:
- Protects the neck: Force is distributed evenly across the strong muscles of the chest and shoulders, leaving the airway completely free.
- Spinal health: It prevents sudden, sharp jerks from damaging the delicate neck vertebrae.
- Improves control: It gives you significantly more steering power over enthusiastic pullers or reactive dogs without turning the walk into a physical battle.

A small adjustment to your gear makes a massive difference to their safety, comfort, and longevity.

Not sure which style or fit is right for your dog? Pop past West Acres Animal Hospital for expert advice on choosing the perfect walking gear.

Those little stick-shaped bacteria? They're called rods, and when we see a lot of them in an ear smear, it usually means infection.

Rod infections sometimes need stronger, more targeted treatment, which is exactly why identifying them correctly under the microscope matters so much.

Noticed your pet scratching at their ears or shaking their head? Book a consult and let's take a look.
