Ever wondered why there's a pangolin in our logo?
We're proudly Lowveld, and the pangolin is one of our bushveld's most remarkable residents. South Africa has only one pangolin species, Temminck's ground pangolin, and it's found in bushveld areas including here in the Lowveld. Solitary, covered in scales and mostly active at night, it's seldom seen.
Sadly, pangolins are also the world's most trafficked mammal, poached for their scales and meat. Our pangolin is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and its numbers are believed to be declining.
That's why we want to support Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre, a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation centre in Limpopo. Dr Dean recently visited and met Kuru, a pangolin currently in their care.
Meet Safta, Kuru's mom. Pangolins are nocturnal, so whenever Kuru is awake, Safta is out walking with Kuru, caring for the pangolin and making sure nothing goes wrong.
Many of the pangolins that reach Umoya Khulula have been confiscated from traffickers. After veterinary stabilisation, the team takes on the long, patient work of rehabilitation so that each one can go back to the wild. They also care for injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife of many kinds, all without government funding. Donations feed the animals and pay for their medical care.
