Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes seasonal outbreaks of respiratory tract illness throughout the world. In South Africa the RSV season is between February and June.
Who does it affect?
RSV causes acute respiratory tract illness in persons of all ages. It is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in children younger than one year and the most common cause of medically attended LRTI in children younger than five years. Almost all children are infected by two years of age, and reinfection is common.
