Seemingly meaningless toys can sometimes be the anchor in a childs therapy session (and life) โš“๏ธ

These three toys, specifically the one on the right (affectionately referred to as "Chickaletta") was the centre of a childs therapy session today. This child couldn't move on, try anything else, or engage much until they had found their chickaletta.

Of course, we don't want kids to be that fixated on toys and objects as it signifies a nervous system that feels out of control and overwhelmed. But, when its their only way of anchoring a very fragile ship in a stormy sea - we will dive in and help you find your chickaletta ๐Ÿ”

Here's a little info on how object fixation and dyspraxia are linked: Dyspraxia involves a breakdown in motor planning, making it difficult for the brain to conceptualize and execute movements in the physical environment. Carrying or fixating on an object provides continuous tactile and proprioceptive feedback, acting as a sensory anchor to help organize an unsteady nervous system. For a child struggling with ideation, a familiar object reduces cognitive load by offering a predictable script for play instead of requiring them to invent new actions. These objects also serve as vital self-regulation tools, offering a sense of safety and a reliable bridge for shared attention in overwhelming spaces. Additionally, clutching an item can physically stabilize the trunk or shoulder girdle, compensating for challenges with bilateral integration and postural control.

Whether its a chickaletta, a random straw or a specific ball you like in the OT room - we will help you find it. Because OT is no good if the childs nervous system doesn't feel safe. โค๏ธ

This community of ours. It never stops amazing us. ๐Ÿ’š

Issue #5 of The Whisper is here โ€” and July gave us a lot to write about. A broken foot that reminded us what community really means. Sixteen children who showed us what is possible in three weeks of Block Therapy. A goodbye that moved us to tears. A new face joining the team. And a parent's story that we think every family needs to read. We hope it lands in your heart the way it landed in ours.

As we enter a new term, we hold space for all the families we work with. New beginnings offer an opportunity of hope but also some anxiety and we are here to hold space for both realities.

School is not easy for the kids we see and their families. It is a space filled with anxiety and unknown and it is a weight the whole family bears alongside the child. Today we are mindful of all the families in whatever space they find themselves in.

We are mindful of the Mom hoping their child will be able to make a friend this term at school because their self-esteem is so badly affected by their poor social interaction at school. We think of the parents prepping for that serious talk with the teacher about how the Ed Psych appointment is essential because the likelihood of the child needing to repeat is extremely high and they will need an assessment to further advocate for it. We think of the families trying to find new schools for their kids. Smaller schools, neuroaffirming schools, schools that get the balance right of pushing them but also allowing them some breathing space. We are mindful of the parents having to try out their fourth or fifth school in 3 years because their child just couldnt cope at the others. We are mindful of the families needing to accept their child needs extra support at school and needing to accept that mainstream is not the route their child is able to take anymore. We think of the parents needing to wave off multiple negative voices because their child needs to be "unschooled" due to severe ASD burnout.

In the same breath, we think of the families that have finally found the right fit. That can finally take a deep breath of relief because this term brings so much hope, joy, laughter and belonging and they're excited for it.

Whatever boat you're in, we're here to row alongside you. We can't take the burden from you, or the child, and we can't make it any lighter. . . but we can hold your hand through it, help guide and advocate for you and help equip you and your child with the right tools so the burden feels lighter to bear.

If one thing is for certain: we can not wait to see your kids! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

"Sometimes, a whisper is all it takes to start a movement." ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ซ
โ€‹Nelson Mandela taught us that change doesn't always require a roar; it requires the quiet courage to show up, the patience to nurture, and the belief that small, consistent actions lead to monumental shifts.
โ€‹At Shout a Whisper, we see this truth every single day in the therapy room. ๐Ÿงฉ
โ€‹We know that a childโ€™s progress isn't built on grand, sweeping moments aloneโ€”itโ€™s built on the "quiet" wins. Itโ€™s the small, intentional movements, the repetitive practice, and the subtle adjustments that eventually allow a child to find their voice, build their confidence, and navigate their world with independence.
โ€‹Today, we honor Madibaโ€™s legacy by staying committed to those "small" momentsโ€”because we know that when those moments are multiplied, they change a child's life forever.

It takes a villageโ€”and at Shout a Whisper, it takes the whole team! ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

โ€‹This week, we caught a beautiful, spontaneous moment in the therapy room when an impromptu gathering of three of our incredible Occupational Therapists turned into a shared session.

โ€‹Our practice culture is built on the belief that we aren't just individual therapists; we are a unified support system.

When a child walks through our doors, our entire practice aligns to lift them up, share insights, and collaborate to create the best possible environment for them to thrive.

A massive highlight for everyone in the practice was joining in on a game of hide-and-seekโ€”proving that the best therapeutic breakthroughs often come wrapped in pure, collaborative fun!

โ€‹Seeing our team step in so naturally to support this wonderful boy is exactly what we are all about.

One game, so much potential ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ†๐Ÿฅ’๐Ÿฅ”

Often you can use one game to achieve multiple purposes and its not uncommon for a therapist to use one game/activity/idea for multiple kids but all for different reasons. In two days, this activity was used for the following purposes:

๐Ÿฉต To motivate one child to do some difficult postural control work that they usually avoid but when he has to be the farmer and plant the veggies, suddenly he can do it!

๐Ÿฉต As a fine motor game - tongs were added to take the veggies out without touching "the chemicals".

๐Ÿฉต As a sorting activity - in colours, numbers or veggies type.

๐Ÿฉต As a balancing activity - needing to collect the veggies off the floor whilst standing on one leg.

๐Ÿฉต As a bilateral integration activity, sitting on the different swings and trying to throw them in the bucket.

There were so many more ways. We often have parents asking if they can buy the toys/equipment and use it as home. The truth is: its never about the activity.... its how you use it and what you use it for. And that, is only really a skill that the OT knows how to tweak. Feel free though to replicate anything the therapist does with your child and please do buy the things we use, if it's within your means to. But please know: therapy does not equate to the activities and equipment we use. It's about the therapist and their incredible ability to cater for the child's therapeutic needs in every session to help develop their individual differences and needs! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ
