If you struggle to swallow capsules, your head position might be making it harder.
Most people instinctively tilt their head backward when taking medicine. But for capsules, research suggests the opposite technique can make swallowing easier.
It’s called the lean-forward technique.
Take the capsule with water, then tilt your chin slightly toward your chest as you swallow.
Why?
Capsules are often less dense than water, so they tend to float upward. When you lean your head forward, the capsule moves toward the back of the mouth and closer to the entrance of the throat, helping it travel in the direction you want it to go.
In a study of 151 adults, researchers found that the lean-forward technique improved swallowing of capsules in 88.5% of participants who tried it.
Interestingly, tablets are different. Because many tablets are denser than water and sink, another technique known as the pop-bottle method may work better for some tablets.
One important exception: if you regularly have difficulty swallowing food, liquids, or medication, don’t simply rely on swallowing tricks. Persistent difficulty swallowing can be a sign of dysphagia and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Sometimes making medicine easier to swallow isn’t about more water.
It’s about changing the angle.
