A strangulated hernia is a 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 condition that requires 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 medical care.

A hernia that gets stuck in your abdominal wall (an incarcerated hernia) still allows blood flow to the tissue. But over time, the hernia may get large enough that pressure from your abdomen restricts blood flow to the small intestine (a strangulated hernia.)

This causes the tissue or intestine to die, and gangrene or sepsis can set in. In extreme cases, it 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥.
