Phymatous rosacea causes skin to thicken and scar, making it bumpy, swollen, and sometimes discoloured. This rare but treatable type most often affects the nose—resulting in what is sometimes called a bulbous nose, or rhinophyma—and appears more frequently in men than in women. Fortunately, there are solutions and courses of treatment available.
Get in touch with Dr Jacques Van Wyk on 021 007 3771 to book a consultation if you suspect that you are suffering from symptoms associated with Phymatous rosacea.

Users of Retin A should be careful to introduce this skin treatment slowly but surely. Start by using it every third night for the first two weeks; every second night the two weeks thereafter; and every night after a month of use. This gives your skin a chance to get used to it.
Wash your face, dry it well, apply a pea-sized amount of Retin A over your entire face, then follow it with the application of a suitable moisturiser. Only ever use it in the evenings. While using Retin A you must wear a 30+ SPF sunscreen in the daytime, every single day.

Retin A helps with the reduction of fine lines and uneven pigmentation. It promotes cellular differentiation, extracellular matrix synthesis, including an increase in hyaluronic acid and decreased MMP production. These findings explain the reported smoother skin, rosy glow, decrease in blotchy pigmentation and diminished fine lines and wrinkles.

Retin A normalizes the differentiation of the skin. In the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, cell division only takes place at the basal layer. The cells then move up and mature until it comes to the top layer of the skin, where it gets shed. Retin A helps to normalise this process. This leads to the natural loosening and break up of whiteheads and blackheads. In addition, Retin A also facilitates anti-inflammatory activity.

Pityriasis versicolor is a common fungal skin infection that causes the skin to change colour. This can include light patches, dark patches, as well as salmon-coloured or red patches that present as very thin plaques that will produce a bran-like scale when scratched. It is caused by the overgrowth of a yeast called Malassezia, which lives on everyone's skin, but causes problems when it goes into overdrive.
A doctor will normally confirm the diagnosis by doing a scratch test and looking for traces of the yeast under a microscope. There are lots of symptomatic treatments available that seek to supress the growth of the yeast.

Unfortunately, conventional psoriasis can also be associated with psoriatic arthritis - a type of inflammatory arthritis of which the symptoms include joint pain, stiffness and swelling, which may flare and subside. This condition can be very destructive, so if you have psoriasis and develop any form of joint pain, you should have it checked out immediately. The earlier you get on systemic treatment, the better.

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease, which means people who have it are also much more prone to metabolic disease. It's actually an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events like heart attacks or strokes. As such, people who have been diagnosed with psoriasis should be sure to check their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, and take care to maintain a healthy weight by means of exercise and a balanced diet.
