If your eyes are feeling scratchy or tired, it might be more than just long hours in front of the screen, it is often the dry winter air, heaters, or cold gusty winds drying out your natural tear film.

What is happening?

Your eyes rely on a thin layer of moisture to stay smooth and protected. When winter air breaks that layer down, your eyes lose their shield.

Here are the common signs to watch out for:

โ€ข A gritty, burning feeling as if you have sand in your eye
โ€ข Unexpected watering of the eyes, especially if you are out in the wind
โ€ข Blurry vision that clears up when you blink
โ€ข Red, tired eyes after screens or driving

What can you do to relieve the symptoms?:

- Take screen breaks
- Angle the car heater away from your face
- Use warm compresses
- Applying lubricating eye drops

Your eyes are incredible and truly precious! They can pick up around 10 million colours ๐Ÿ‘ and this is because of tiny cells in your retina called cones, that are each tuned to different wavelengths of light. Together they help you see detail, contrast and colour in a way even top cameras canโ€™t fully match ๐Ÿ’™

Are you reading this post right now with a slight squint? ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Squinting is something we do so automatically that we hardly even notice we are doing it. By narrowing your eyelids, you temporarily reduce the amount of light entering your eye, making things look just a little bit sharper for a split second.

But did you know that constant squinting tightens the tiny muscles around your eyes and forehead. Later in your day, that tension turns into:

โ€ข Dull headaches right above your eyebrows
โ€ข Unexplained neck tension
โ€ข Heavy and fatigued eyes by the afternoon

If you have to squint to read road signs, the TV, or the fine print on your phone, your eyes are working way harder than they should be ๐Ÿ’™

Give your eyes a break and visit us at Nu-Sight S Govender Optometrists for a relaxed, professional screening, and let us get you seeing comfortably again without the extra effort.

Happy Friday! Letโ€™s have some fun and test your IQ! ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Some of us have been told since childhood to eat our carrots ๐Ÿฅ• so we can see better in the dark. But is it actually True or False?

Drop your guess in the comments below before reading further.

The Answer: It is actually mostly a Myth! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

While carrots contain Vitamin A (which keeps your eyes healthy), eating extra carrots will not give you superhero night vision. Did you know that this famous rumour was actually started by the British Royal Air Force during World War II to hide the fact that they had invented a new radar technology to spot enemy planes in the dark โœˆ๏ธ

Enjoy the rest of your Friday and have a wonderful weekend ahead.

Being in a collaborative space is always such a great reminder of why we do what we do.

Had the wonderful opportunity to meet brilliant minds at the 25th Annual Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) Conference hosted at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), where primary eye care providers came together looking at how to make exceptional care more accessible for every community.

Grateful for the insights and to be a part of the collective push to a healthier and more connected future ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ
