Cross Addiction Group
written by L.D current resident
"I found the group extremely insightful. Where I am currently in my program, I can see that where I consume meaning, obsess on a situation or exercise; I addict. Some cross addictions are fleeting, like gambling, but some are at my core that have been triggered from a child wound. At my core, s*x addiction. As a child, my mother never gave me affection as she was incapable. This affected my self-worth & self-esteem & my understanding of intimacy. Every relationship with a girl has been doomed from the beginning because all I seek is the validation, the s*x & the compliments offered. Meaning it’s not about her at all; it’s about what the relationship can offer, good or bad."

Building More Than Accommodation

Renovation is about more than repairing walls, painting beams, or improving accommodation. At our rehabilitation centre, renovating the staff quarters has become an opportunity to learn skills while creating something that will benefit others.

Learning trade skills such as painting, carpentry, preparation, measuring, and maintenance can build confidence and achievement. These skills can become tools for future employment and independence.

There is a deeper lesson in serving others. By investing our time and effort into improving a space that others will use, we learn responsibility, humility, purpose, and the importance of contributing to something greater than ourselves.

Renovation requires teamwork, communication, listening, problem-solving, and patience. Working toward a common goal strengthens relationships and develops interpersonal skills.

Recovery is not only about overcoming the past; it is about building a better future. Through practical work, service, teamwork, and learning, we discover that growth can happen through what we build together.

BEEing Ready for the Harvest 🐝🍯

Spring is buzzing into life at Pelgrim’s Place, and our bees are getting ready for one of the busiest and sweetest times of the year: the spring honey harvest!

As the West Coast bursts into colour, the bees becomes a hive of activity. Regular inspections help us check for a healthy queen and brood pattern, ensure the colony has enough space to grow, and look out for signs of pests, disease or food shortages.

The West Coast provides an incredible buffet for our bees. Fynbos, veggies, wildflowers, flowering succulents, aloes, herbs and garden flowers all contribute to the nectar and pollen that sustain a healthy colony.

You can support bees in your own garden too. Lavender, rosemary, sage, borage, aloes, gazanias and indigenous flowering plants are all excellent choices.

And this is why supporting your local beekeeper is so important. Local honey contains traces of pollen from the plants in your surrounding environment. Regularly consuming small amounts of local honey helps expose the body to local pollen over time, helping the immune system become more accustomed to it and reducing the effects of seasonal hay fever.

So, when you buy local honey, you’re supporting local beekeepers, healthy bee populations and your surrounding ecosystem—while enjoying a little taste of the landscape around you.

Support local. Plant flowers. Keep the West Coast buzzing. 🐝🌼🍯

King Baby Syndrome 👑🍼

What happens when an adult never learns to grow beyond “I want what I want, when I want it”?

King Baby Syndrome describes a pattern of self-centred thinking, entitlement and emotional immaturity. The person expects others to meet their needs, struggles with frustration, avoids responsibility and can become controlling when they don't get their way.

They are the “King” because they expect to be served.

They are the “Baby” because they expect immediate gratification and struggle to tolerate discomfort.

The result?
👉 Relationships become transactional.
👉 Responsibility gets pushed onto others.
👉 “No” feels like rejection.
👉 Discomfort becomes someone else's problem.
👉 Growth gets replaced by demands.

Recovery means learning something different:
I am not the centre of the universe.
I don't have to get what I want.
I can tolerate discomfort.
I can take responsibility for myself.
And I can learn to give, not just receive.

The first step out of King Baby isn't becoming a perfect adult.

Giving Back Through Recovery

Recovery is not only about personal change—it’s also about learning to take responsibility and make a positive contribution to the community.

Recently, some of our residents helped restore a wall in Paternoster that had been defaced. What may seem like a small act of service is an important part of our programme: taking pride in our surroundings, giving back, and leaving something better than we found it.

We believe that making a difference in the community is an important part of recovery. Through practical acts of service, our residents learn that positive change starts with small, meaningful actions.

From the ground up by current resident P.B.

“I have come to realise the reality of the mammoth task I have before me. The way to succeed in this journey is to understand that there is no finish line, only daily checkpoints.
The battle is not to prove sobriety but to make lasting incremental changes to a psyche built over multiple years. Starting with the person you see in the mirror is the most daunting task of all, but entirely necessary to achieve any kind of progress.
Band aids and plasters are guaranteed to fall short; the only approach that can possibly gain momentum is starting from the ground up.”

🎨 Art, Connection & Giving Back 💙 Introducing the Pelgrims Rocks Project.

Recovery is about more than leaving substances behind—it’s about rediscovering purpose, creativity, connection and belonging.

Our recent rock-painting project gave residents the opportunity to express themselves through art while sharing messages of hope, faith and encouragement with the wider community.

Each painted rock includes a QR code linking to educational resources about addiction, recovery and the support we provide.

Creative projects like this encourage self-expression, patience, focus and a sense of achievement—while reminding residents of the importance of giving back.

Sometimes, a simple painted rock can carry a powerful message: Hope is real. Help is available. Recovery is possible. 💙

Look out for the Pelgrims Rocks when out & about in Paternoster!

🌊🍣 Recovery is about discovering new ways to connect, create, and thrive.

This month, our residents enjoyed a coastal foraging challenge where they explored the shoreline, gathered natural ingredients, prepared sushi, and created their own seafood restaurant concepts.

The day was filled with teamwork, creativity, laughter, and problem-solving—proving that meaningful experiences and genuine joy don't require substances.

Time in nature, shared purpose, and creative expression are powerful tools for building confidence, healthy relationships, and lasting recovery.

Every challenge is another step toward a brighter future. 💙
