Social Employment Fund (SEF) Enterprise Development Spotlight: Owethu Mamba

I am Owethu Mamba, a young man from Matsulu in the Mbombela Local Municipality. More than just being an entrepreneur, I am someone who truly cares about my community. I want to see it thrive, and I believe that building a sustainable business is one way I can help create jobs and a better future for the people around me.

I run WISE-EGGS (Pty) Ltd. I have always believed that money should work for you rather than be spent as soon as you earn it. That belief inspired me to start a small poultry business and turn my savings into something that could benefit both my community and future generations.

It was not easy at the start. I began with just 40 layers and very basic equipment. Limited resources and capital tested my patience, but I kept pushing forward. Today, I am proud to say I have grown my flock to 100 chickens and officially registered the business to take it to the next level.

The SEF Programme and Lima were exactly what I needed to get organised. They taught me how to manage my cash flow and keep proper records, making the business feel much more stable. More importantly, they gave me the confidence to stop thinking small and start planning for long-term growth.

Personally, the journey has changed how I see myself. I have realised that with the right mentorship and discipline, I can build something that matters. It has given me a sense of purpose and the drive to keep growing.

I have big dreams for WISE-EGGS. I want to grow our capacity to between 3,000 and 7,000 layers so that we can supply local supermarkets and create more jobs.

I would like to thank Lima and the SEF Programme for their support. They helped me turn my vision into reality, and I am truly grateful for everything they have done for me and my business.

Linkie Thabyane, founder of Nkwatle Sanctuary Farming in Longden Village under Blouberg Local Municipality, began her farming journey in 2023 as a backyard farmer after joining Lima Rural Development Foundationโ€™s Smallholder Farmers Support Programme.

Through support from her local traditional authority, she later acquired a 2-hectare farm where she is currently operating. In the same year, she also received infrastructure development support through the De Beers Capacity Development Programme, which helped her transition from backyard farming to a smallholder farming enterprise.

With ongoing support from Lima, including training, farm visits, technical advice, and market linkages, Linkie successfully planted her first 1 hectare of pumpkins. Her progress highlights the impact of targeted support in building young, emerging farmers into sustainable agricultural entrepreneurs.

Street Business School Participant Spotlight:

My name is Lerato Matlou, and I am from a village called Mokgalwana in the Moses Kotane Municipality, North West Province. I am a young entrepreneur passionate about building sustainable businesses.

I run Ratoโ€™s Snack Hamper, which makes gift boxes for children filled with ready-to-eat sweet and savoury snacks that can be enjoyed immediately or shared at events.

I started my business to provide convenient, customisable gift options while taking advantage of a low-cost opportunity with high demand. With limited capital, I handled everything myself, including marketing, customer service, and finances. I am motivated by creating meaningful gifts that bring joy while building a business that reflects my creativity and independence.

I am currently enrolled in the Lima Street Business School (SBS) Township Economy Programme (TEP), funded by Tshikululu Trust and supported by Valterra Platinum Ltd. The programme supports entrepreneurs like me to strengthen business structures, improve record-keeping, and manage cash flow, while boosting confidence and helping us think strategically about growth and sustainability.

I plan to grow by improving my products, expanding my customer base online, and building a strong brand.

I am grateful to be part of the Lima SBS programme, and with the support of the facilitators and my mentor, I believe my business will grow.
