What is HPV & how it causes cervical and vulvar cancer:

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a very common virus passed through skin-to-skin contact including intimate contact.

Most people will get HPV at some point — and in most cases, the body clears it on its own.

Some high-risk types of HPV, if left untreated, can cause changes in cervical and vulval cells over time. These changes may develop into cancer, often without symptoms at first.

This is why prevention, cervical screening and early diagnosis is so important.

More than 660,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year.

Global data shows that women in low and middle income countries carry the greatest burden of this disease, largely because access to screening, prevention and treatment is still limited. This is a serious inequality, especially since cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when found early.

International initiatives such as IGCS are working to reduce these gaps by improving specialist training, strengthening healthcare systems and supporting clinicians who care for women every day.

With awareness, screening and early treatment, we can change outcomes and save lives.
