Calling all diabetics

Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes where high blood sugar can damage the small blood vessels at the back of the eye (the retina). In the early stages it often causes no symptoms, but it can progress and lead to blurred vision or permanent vision loss if not picked up and treated early. Regular screening helps detect changes early, when treatment is most effective.

What the screening involves:
We will take 2 retinal photographs per eye.
The images will be uploaded to a secure assessment program to check for any concerning features.
We will then send you feedback with the results.

What happens next:
If your screening is normal: we will advise repeat screening in 12 months (or as advised based on your overall risk).
If there are signs of diabetic retinopathy: we will refer you to an ophthalmologist for further assessment and treatment.

Appointment details:
The appointment takes about 30 minutes. Discovery will cover this as part of Chronic benefits. Other medical aids vary.

We are happy to see anyone with diabetes and send the results on to you and your doctor if you're not from our practice.

Taryn and Ben are back from leave, refreshed and excited to reconnect with our lives here in Port Alfred.
We're even more excited to announce that Dr Ruth-Anne is staying on, joining us for the day-to-day work and allowing us to dream of new ways to reach out and provide health care to the community.
Although Ruth-Anne looks young, her CV is impressive and we've had universally excellent feedback from her patients.
As always, we are a team providing care; notes are shared between the three of us.

We've seen an extraordinary amount of Influenza and RSV these past few weeks, so it seems a good time to remind everyone that good sleep, healthy eating and exercise are essential to staying as healthy as possible. We've also had lots of queries about our immune booster drip, which is available alongside the energy boosters and body detox. In the interests of transparency and good science, it's important to note that although many people report positive effects and the science shows some nutrients are highly effective when someone is deficient, for otherwise healthy people the evidence from randomised controlled trials that these cocktails reliably boost energy, add additional protection, or help you ‘detox’ is relatively weak.

They say that a good woodcutter takes time to sharpen their axe. It's been a while since we've had a holiday (nearly a year in fact). Taryn and Ben will be away from 26 June to 12 July.

parkrun milestone...
You've probably heard us mention parkrun (which can also be parkwalk!) as a way of getting exercise, while enjoying nature and community. This past weekend saw the 1,000,000th parkrun event take place. It's an impressive milestone, but we're even more excited about the first-timers. Before joining the practice, Ben worked as the Clinical Medicolegal advisor to the Eastern Cape department of health (ECDOH). It was interesting work, and is crucial for provinces to do well (and translate into better clinical care) given the billions being spent. While GP work takes most of his time and attention, he's kept his hand in... currently consulting to the Mpumalanga department of health (DOH). This week he spent Thursday and Friday at Mmametlakhe Hospital.
