BABYGYM DEVELOPMENTAL Q&A

Question:
"Is home or school the best place for my young child, and at what age should they ideally join preschool?"

Answer:
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to whether a child should stay at home during the first few years of life or attend preschool. The most important question is not where a child spends these early years, but how they experience them.

The first six years of life represent a period of extraordinary brain development. During this time, a child's brain is shaped by loving relationships, responsive interactions, rich sensory experiences, purposeful movement, nutritious food, adequate rest, and abundant opportunities to observe and imitate trusted role models.

If a child remains at home with a parent or caregiver who is emotionally available, actively engaged, and intentional about supporting development through play and everyday experiences, the home can provide an exceptional environment in which to build a strong foundation while the immune system continues to mature in familiar surroundings.

At the same time, a high-quality preschool with small class sizes can be an excellent choice for families with working parents, provided it offers warm, consistent relationships, low levels of stress, ample opportunities for movement and free play, and developmentally appropriate experiences rather than a strong emphasis on formal academic instruction.

According to the Triune Brain theory, children generally become more socially ready to wait, share, and take turns between the ages of three and four. Whereas younger toddlers typically engage in solitary and parallel play, children of this age begin to seek greater interaction with their peers through cooperative play, imaginative play, and simple competitive games. As their social brain matures, meaningful interaction with a wider circle of children becomes increasingly beneficial.

From four to six years of age, the emphasis gradually shifts towards building the bridges between concrete and abstract learning. During this stage, it becomes increasingly important for the child to learn from a literate adult who enjoys reading aloud and shares an enthusiasm for the world of language, numbers, and symbols. Such an environment nurtures curiosity, strengthens early literacy and numeracy, and helps children transition from hands-on experiences to more abstract thinking.

From BabyGym's perspective, the goal is never to accelerate learning, but to establish a firm foundation for lifelong development. Before children are expected to sit still, read, write, or perform academically, they need well-integrated sensory systems, strong muscles, mature movement patterns, emotional security, and abundant opportunities to move, play, and explore.

Ultimately, parents should choose the environment that best supports both their family's circumstances and their child's developmental needs. Whether a child spends these formative years at home or in preschool, children flourish when they feel emotionally secure and are free to move, explore, converse, reason and discover the joy of learning.

STAY CLOSE TO THE GROUND

All mammals start their developmental journey from the ground up, and babies should too!

If you were to watch a 14-month time-lapse of a baby reaching milestones in sequence, you will see a very slow and gradual move away from the ground. Floor time to rolling, rolling to sitting, sitting to crawling, crawling to pulling up, pulling up to standing, standing to cruising and cruising to walking.

When this transition is slow and progressive, all sensory motor systems stay up to speed. The baby is constantly growing โ€“ their body awareness/body map needs to update all the time (that is why continuing with baby massage can be a great help!), the balance system needs to level up, and the visual system needs to overlap with the balance system.

Baby now needs to maintain visual orientation and balance while moving. Finally, babies need to integrate milestones already reached with emerging milestones. Phew! No wonder they need sleep; this stuff is tiring!

With this very slow and gradual move away from the ground, the babyโ€™s protective responses do a great job of keeping the baby safe. When the baby topples over or falls, it gets a slight bump, but itโ€™s generally more fright than injury that causes the baby to cry. On the other hand, if a baby is placed in a contraption like a walking ring where the height and speed exceed what the baby is equipped to handle, we unfortunately see accidents that end up in the emergency room.

It doesnโ€™t take much to set a child up for a lifetime of movement, and, as an extra bonus, finding joy in the ability to move!

But it all does start in the baby years.

EUSTACHIAN TUBES AND EAR INFECTION

Eustachian tubes are the channels that connect the middle ear to the throat.

The eustachian tubes have three primary functions. They:

โ€ข Drain excess fluids and secretions from the middle ear.
โ€ข Ventilate the middle ear and equalise air pressure on either side of the eardrum.
โ€ข Protect the middle ear from microorganisms that cause disease.

Did you know?
Eustachian tubes in babies differ from adults in that they are shorter, more horizontal, and narrower. (See the comment section for an image.)

This makes it easier for fluid and bacteria to travel from the nose and throat to the middle ear, increasing the risk of ear infections in infants and young children.

As children grow, their Eustachian tubes lengthen and become more angled, reducing the frequency of ear infections.

Proper eustachian tube function helps maintain overall ear health, including hearing. A simple massage can drain the eustachian tubes effectively.

๐ŸŒฟ Did you know?

Newborns don't only feed often because their tummies are tiny.

They also feed because you are their safe place. Your warmth, heartbeat, smell and cuddles help them regulate their breathing, heart rate, body temperature and emotions.

Being close to you isn't "spoiling" themโ€”it's exactly what they were designed to need โค๏ธ

In BabyGym we often talk about how development begins with connection. Before babies can confidently explore the world, they first need to feel safe, loved and secure in your arms.

So if your little one wants "just another cuddle," know that you are meeting a real developmental need.

Hold them. Cuddle them. Respond to them.

These early moments lay the foundation for healthy emotional, physical and neurological development ๐Ÿง
