If the same food safety issue keeps returning, your system is trying to tell you something.

One useful KPI to monitor is your Repeat Deviation Rate: how often the same non-conformance or issue reappears over time.

A high repeat deviation rate can indicate:
❌ poor root cause analysis
❌ weak corrective actions
❌ operational pressures overriding procedures

Fixing the symptom isn’t always the same as fixing the problem.

The Africa Food Show is currently taking place at the CTICC in Cape Town, bringing together buyers, suppliers, manufacturers, service providers and industry specialists from across the food sector.

Representing Entecom Western Cape, Dominique Hart (Sales & Business Development) and Joanne Cackett (Technical Manager) attended the event yesterday to explore current innovations, reconnect with familiar faces and valued clients, and make some new industry connections along the way.

The show provided a great opportunity to engage with organisations across the food safety, hygiene, laboratory, chemical and service sectors, while gaining insight into the latest products, services and innovations supporting the food industry.

A special shout out to Fairview Wine and Cheese for the fun goat tower photo opportunity and the chance to win a delicious cheese hamper!

We also enjoyed meeting emerging food entrepreneurs, including BonBon's Handmade Goodness, whose passion for developing and growing local products was inspiring to see. We look forward to following their journey and wish them every success as they continue to expand their presence within the food industry.

Thank you to the exhibitors, organisers and industry professionals who took the time to connect with us. We look forward to continuing the conversations and opportunities that began at the show!

This month in our 2026 Food Safety Calendar, we focus on the effectiveness of your corrective actions and food safety culture.

❓Are we fixing root causes, or just treating symptoms?
❓How often do the same deviations return?
❓Do staff feel comfortable reporting any concerns?

This month is all about looking beyond the paperwork to ask deeper questions about the culture and systems thinking shaping your food business. Join us as we unpack these concepts throughout June.

Still riding the high from our time at the 2026 Food Safety Summit SA! What a pleasure it was to connect with so many of you and catch up with a few familiar faces too.

One of the highlights was bumping into longtime friend Michelle Bosch all the way from Gqeberha, as well as spending time with inspiring food safety champions like Tessa Morris.

This is why we love being part of the Food Safety Summit. Beyond the presentations and exhibitions, it's an opportunity to connect with the people who continue to drive our industry forward.

Until next time.
