👂 What are we looking at?

This past week this photograph was taken of our patient’s eardrum when she came in for a hearing test. It shows a perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane) in a patient with a history of recurrent middle ear infections.

The round opening in the eardrum is a perforation, which developed after repeated episodes of infection and inflammation weakened the delicate tissue.

A perforated eardrum may cause:

* Hearing loss (usually conductive)
* Recurrent ear discharge
* A feeling of fullness in the ear
* Occasional pain, especially during infections
* Increased susceptibility to water entering the middle ear

Some eardrum perforations heal on their own, but those associated with chronic or recurrent middle ear infections may persist and require ongoing monitoring or surgical repair (tympanoplasty).

If you experience repeated ear infections, persistent ear discharge, or notice a change in your hearing, don’t ignore these symptoms. Early assessment can help prevent long-term damage to your hearing.

Our Summerstrand practice paid a visit to one of our hearing aid suppliers, Oticon, at their beautiful premises in Roodepoort last week. We learned so much about what happens in the background of hearing aid manufacturing, servicing, repairs, distribution and legislation from the amazing team at Demant. The tour was informative and opened our eyes to the details that go into hearing aid manufacturing. Laser printing has transformed the way custom hearing aids and custom ear moulds are manufactured. A huge thank you to Frank, Kai, Eunice and Marlene de Wet for your hospitality and expertise.

These two brothers came to see us for their annual hearing checkups today. Melanie Naudé Audiologist was part of the professional team that diagnosed their hearing loss soon after they were born. They both received hearing aids before they were 3 months old. They have dedicated parents that have given their best to support them throughout their lives. Now they are living lives filled with family, friends, sport, church and school/university life. They are testament to the fact that hearing loss doesn’t have to hold you back to living life to the fullest. They are also an example of how early intervention can lead to a positive outcome.
