Medical Forum Theatre – the Eastern Cape’s first private day hospital – has a longstanding history within the metro. Founded during the 1960’s by Dr Johan du Toit (now retired), its legacy continues to avail general theatre space to other medical practitioners for day case surgeries. The team of medical professionals at the Eye and Laser Institute set out to create a Centre of Excellence for Ophthalmology care in the Eastern Cape through the Eye and Laser Institute, with a strong focus on day surgery.

“The entire value chain is focused on efficiency and quality nursing care,” said Dr Andries Marais, managing director. Uncompromising service and high quality nursing care ensures that patients are discharged within three to four hours, depending on the procedure. In addition to the ease of not having to stay for a long period of time, patients also find the experience of entering the Medical Forum Theatre less daunting than a large hospital. Our specialist ophthalmologist, Dr Emil Goosen, recently attended the Retina World Congress in Fort Lauderdale, Florida – a leading international event bringing together retina specialists and healthcare professionals involved in the management of retinal diseases and disorders.

The congress provided an excellent opportunity to explore the latest developments, innovations, and advancements in retinal care, ensuring that patients continue to benefit from world-class treatment and expertise.

While reeling in valuable knowledge and fresh insights to bring back to our team, Dr Goosen also found time to enjoy one of his greatest passions – fishing. 🎣

As we reflect on the celebration of International Nurses Day 2026, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our incredible nursing team for the dedication, compassion, and professionalism they demonstrate every single day.

The day served as a meaningful reminder of the invaluable role our nurses play within our hospital. Your unwavering commitment to patient care, your resilience in challenging moments, and the kindness you show to every patient and colleague are what truly define excellence in nursing. It is a privilege to work alongside such a remarkable team, and I am immensely proud of everything you continue to achieve.

I would also like to express sincere gratitude to Advanced Health Day Hospitals for thoughtfully recognising our nursing staff with generous gifts and snack boxes. These gestures of appreciation made the day even more special and served as a wonderful acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication our nurses bring to their roles every day.
