Description:
Medical Forum Theatre – the Eastern Cape’s first private day hospital – has a longstanding history within the metro. Founded during the 1960’s by Dr Johan du Toit (now retired), its legacy continues to avail general theatre space to other medical practitioners for day case surgeries. The team of medical professionals at the Eye and Laser Institute set out to create a Centre of Excellence for Ophthalmology care in the Eastern Cape through the Eye and Laser Institute, with a strong focus on day surgery.

“The entire value chain is focused on efficiency and quality nursing care,” said Dr Andries Marais, managing director. Uncompromising service and high quality nursing care ensures that patients are discharged within three to four hours, depending on the procedure. In addition to the ease of not having to stay for a long period of time, patients also find the experience of entering the Medical Forum Theatre less daunting than a large hospital. At Advanced MFT, we are proud to support Dr Werner Hurter, an Orthopaedic Surgeon with almost two decades of experience serving the community.

Shoulder pain isn't always something you have to “just live with”.

Shoulder pain can have many causes, ranging from an acute injury to problems involving the muscles, tendons, joints or surrounding structures.

It may be worth seeking medical advice if you experience:

🔹 Difficulty lifting or moving your arm
🔹 Weakness in the shoulder or arm
🔹 Pain that interferes with sleep
🔹 Stiffness or a noticeable reduction in movement

MEET DR CHRIS ARKELL 🦵
Specialised care for every step of your journey.

At Advanced MFT, we are proud to support Dr Chris Arkell, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at PE Knees.

Dr Arkell graduated in Medicine from the University of Cape Town and completed his specialist orthopaedic training at Livingstone and Tygerberg Hospitals under Walter Sisulu University. He qualified as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2021 and went on to work as a Consultant at Livingstone Hospital before joining PE Knees.

With a focus on knee surgery, Dr Arkell is dedicated to helping patients manage pain, restore movement, and return to the activities that matter to them.

He also has a particular interest in hip conditions, minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery, reflecting his interest in modern approaches to orthopaedic care.

Your knees help keep you moving every day, but when pain starts interfering with your daily activities, it may be time to seek professional advice.

Don't ignore these warning signs:
🔹 Persistent pain – pain that doesn't improve or keeps returning.
🔹 Swelling – ongoing or recurring swelling around the knee.
🔹 Limited movement – difficulty bending, straightening or moving comfortably.
🔹 Instability – a knee that feels weak, unsteady or gives way.
