🐾 Together, we can make a difference. ❤️

Our AMFT team recently came together to host a raffle in support of Animal Welfare Port Elizabeth, raising funds and collecting much-needed donations for animals in need.

This past Saturday, some of our wonderful team members had the privilege of handing over the donations, including dog and cat food, blankets and other essentials, to support the incredible work Animal Welfare Port Elizabeth does in our community. 🐶🐱

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets, donated and supported this initiative. Every contribution, big or small, helps provide care, comfort and a little extra love to animals in need. 🐾💙

We are incredibly proud of our team for coming together to give back to our community and support such a worthwhile cause. 💙

MEET DR WIHAN DE JAGER
THE SPECIALIST. THE STORY. THE PERSON.

THE SPECIALIST 👁️
From medical school to community service in emergency medicine and anaesthesiology, followed by three years in ophthalmology, numerous cataract surgeries and many exams, Dr Wihan de Jager went on to specialise in ophthalmology at Wits.

Throughout his career, his focus has remained clear: helping patients protect and improve their vision.

During his specialist training, he developed a special interest in vitreoretinal work, as well as the prevention and management of diabetic eye disease, which also formed the basis of his MMED. He is drawn to the precision and complexity of ophthalmic surgery and, most importantly, to the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in his patients' quality of life.

For Dr de Jager, ophthalmology is unique: “You can open a new world for a patient in a matter of minutes.”

THE STORY 🌿
The path to becoming an ophthalmologist has been one of dedication, perseverance and a few unexpected challenges along the way. Looking back, he recalls completing his final exams while studying with his one-year-old sitting on his shoulders – and relying on candlelight during Stage 6 load shedding!

His path brought him to Port Elizabeth, where he says, “Port Elizabeth chose us – God knew.” Today, he also consults in Uitenhage and Graaff-Reinet, helping patients from surrounding communities access specialised eye care.

THE PERSON
Outside the consulting room and theatre, Dr de Jager is a devoted family man who loves spending time outdoors with his family. He is also a passionate angler and has represented South Africa in Namibia! 🎣

HIS ADVICE👁️
“Prevention is better than cure.”

Dr de Jager knows it’s a cliché, but believes it could not ring truer. Many eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and retinal detachments, can be diagnosed and treated successfully when detected early. Get screened regularly and educate yourself on the warning signs of these conditions.

Honouring the spirit of Mandela Day through service. 💙

Some acts of kindness simply cannot be measured in 67 minutes.

In honour of Mandela Day on 18 July, Dr Grobler of Bay Urology generously donated his time and surgical expertise to perform six life-changing surgeries at no cost to patients who had been waiting for essential care. Advanced MFT is proud to support and be part of his Mandela Day initiative each year, and our team looks forward to contributing to this meaningful cause.

These procedures, including circumcisions and orchidopexies, represent far more than successful surgeries. They mean shorter waiting lists, improved quality of life, and renewed hope for six patients and their families.

The willingness to give so generously of his time is a powerful reminder that exceptional healthcare is built not only on clinical excellence, but also on compassion, humility, and a genuine commitment to serving others. His selfless contribution reflects the very best of the medical profession and embodies the values Nelson Mandela championed throughout his life.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Dr Schmidt, Anaesthetist, Dr Mpakama, Medical Practitioner, and our incredible nursing and support teams, whose professionalism and dedication helped make this initiative possible. Together, we honoured Mandiba’s legacy by turning compassion into action.
