Clear up close, blurry in the distance? That’s your clue.

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness or nearsightedness, can make the world further away look a little fuzzy while everything close to you stays clear.

The good news? There are a number of ways we can help correct your vision, depending on your eyes, lifestyle and individual needs.

If distance is starting to lose its detail, come chat to us. Sometimes seeing clearly starts with simply noticing what’s changed.

May is almost over. Have you had your eye examination this year?

A comprehensive eye examination does more than check your spectacle prescription. It provides a full assessment of your eye health - including early detection screening for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and diabetic changes.

Many serious eye conditions develop without noticeable symptoms. An annual examination is one of the most effective preventive health steps you can take.

Appointments available now for June. Call us or visit our website to book.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, and sub-Saharan African populations have a significantly elevated genetic risk.

The most common form - primary open-angle glaucoma - causes no pain and no noticeable symptoms until substantial irreversible vision loss has already occurred. That is why it is often called "the silent thief of sight.

Risk factors include:
• Age over 40
• Family history of glaucoma
• Raised intraocular pressure
• African or Caribbean ancestry
• Previous eye injury

Glaucoma cannot be reversed - but its progression can be slowed significantly with early detection and management.

Intraocular pressure screening is included in a comprehensive eye examination at Vision Works.

Contact lenses are a safe and effective vision correction option - when used correctly.

In South Africa, contact lens related eye infections are preventable with proper hygiene:
✔ Wash and dry hands thoroughly before handling lenses
✔ Never rinse lenses or cases with tap water
✔ Replace your lens case every three months
✔ Never sleep in lenses unless prescribed for extended wear
✔ Attend annual contact lens aftercare examinations

If your eyes are red, painful or producing discharge while wearing lenses - remove them immediately and consult an optometrist.

Up to 80% of what a child learns in the classroom is delivered visually.

Undetected vision problems are a leading but often overlooked contributor to learning difficulties. Many children do not complain about poor sight - they simply assume that everyone sees as they do.

Signs that may indicate a vision problem in your child:
• Sitting very close to the television or board
• Frequent headaches or eye rubbing
• Losing their place when reading
• One eye turning in or out
• Squinting or tilting the head

The South African Optometric Association recommends a first comprehensive eye examination by age 3, and annually from school-going age.

On Africa Day we reflect on what is possible when communities are healthy and supported.

Globally, an estimated 1.1 billion people live with vision impairment that could be prevented or corrected. The majority are in low- and middle-income settings.

In South Africa, access to quality optometry services remains unequal - but awareness is the first step toward change.

We are proud to serve Potchefstroom and the surrounding North West community. If vision problems have kept you or a loved one from accessing care, we encourage you to reach out - eye care is for everyone.

The average South African now spends over 9 hours per day on screens.

Digital eye strain - also known as computer vision syndrome - is one of the fastest-growing visual complaints we see in practice.

Symptoms include:
• Tired or burning eyes after screen use
• Headaches, especially at the end of the day
• Blurred vision when looking into the distance after close work
• Dry eyes and increased blinking

The 20-20-20 rule is a well-supported starting point:
every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Specialised anti-reflective or blue-light filtering lenses may also help. Ask us what would suit your visual demands.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally - and the most treatable.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which typically develops gradually with age.

Key early signs include:
• Blurred or hazy vision, particularly at night
• Increased sensitivity to glare
• Colours appearing faded or yellowed
• Frequent changes in spectacle prescription

Most cataracts can be detected during a routine eye examination before they significantly affect your sight.

If you are over 50, or if family members have had cataracts, a comprehensive examination is recommended.
