๐โฝ ACL + Meniscus Surgery: When Can You Return to Sport?
One of the most common questions after surgery is:
"When can I play sport again?"
The answer isn't just about timeโit's about healing and passing the right tests.
A general timeline looks like this:
๐๏ธ 0โ3 months: Regain movement, reduce swelling, restore strength.
๐ 3โ6 months: Build strength, improve balance, begin running and jumping when appropriate.
โก 6โ9 months: Agility, change of direction and sport-specific training.
๐
9โ12+ months: Return to sport only after meeting objective return-to-sport criteria.
Before returning, you should have:
โ
Full movement
โ
Little to no swelling
โ
Strong leg muscles
โ
Good balance and control
โ
Confidence in your knee
โ
Clearance from your surgeon and rehabilitation team
Remember:
Your knee may feel good before it's fully ready. Returning too soon can increase the risk of another ACL injury.
Recovery isn't a raceโit's about giving yourself the best chance of returning stronger and staying injury-free.
