World Awareness - Alzheimer’s Day 2022:
Alzheimer’s is a condition that can progress to dementia, a condition that impairs people’s mental capacity. As a result, the patient’s memory and capacity for independent thought are compromised. Every year on September 21, there is a celebration known as World Alzheimer’s Day to raise awareness of the condition and discover strategies to combat it. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most prevalent types of dementia and is thought to be the primary factor in between 60 and 80 percent of dementia cases globally.

Greetings from the Fidget Blanket Workshop –
Winter is in full swing and a great time to be indoors, however there are some outdoor activities that can still be done if one is dressed accordingly.
Why not take a walk? 🚶‍♂️ 🚶‍♂️ 🚶‍♂️ 🚶‍♀️ 🚶‍♀️ 🚶‍♀️Walking is a problem when we get older. However, just because someone has Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, it does not mean that they cannot go for walks.
If they are physically able to walk and agree to take a stroll, then get them to walk as regular as possible. Walking is good for the heart, and it reduces stress and anxiety in seniors.
Even if some seniors are physically disabled or have pain or difficulty walking, you can still assist them with a walker, wheelchair, or other movable devices. Although they might not be able to walk, they can still enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.
After being outdoors why not settle inside with a cup of hot chocolate and a Fidget Blanket.

Fidget Blankets are excellent for maintaining fine motor skills and encouraging activities of daily living such as using buttons, zippers, laces, etc. In addition, the fabric prints can evoke fond memories, the activities keep restless minds and fingers busy, and the various fabrics and ribbons stimulate your brain.

Good morning from the Fidget Blanket Workshop,
Last year we decided to add onto our range a “fidget blanket” for your fur babies…..and introduced the Snuffle Ball for canine and feline enrichment. The fleece ball is put together so that you can hide little dry treats inside, like your dog’s favourite biscuits or some catnip for you cat. Your dog will smell the treats and will engage with the ball in hopes that they find them, you cat will enjoy the smell of the catnip and joyously try to sniff as much as they can. It's a great way to provide mental stimulation for your pet and fantastic as a training aid reward delivery system for your pooch. Easy to clean - just put into the washing machine. Comes with a trio of biscuits to get you and your pooch started and a sachet of catnip for your cat’s snuffle ball.
HOW TO USE A SNUFFLE BALL FOR DOGS
1. Place one or two small treats in the ball
2. Place the ball on the floor in front of your dog.
3. Give the command to go to the ball (such as 'okay')
4. WATCH them whilst they find the treat.
5. REMOVE the ball immediately when they have got their reward.
IMPORTANT: Do not leave your dog unsupervised with the ball. It is designed as a training aid. When your dog has snuffled out the treat, remove the ball, giving your dog lots of praise.
HOW TO USE A SNUFFLE BALL FOR CATS…..Put catnip in the folds and give to your cat 😊

Good morning from the Fidget Blanket Work Shop.
I wanted to share some ideas on how to support family members and others with dementia.
Strategies for family members to support someone with dementia💙
• Gain the attention of the person by using their name to
address them. This not only shows respect for them but also
upholds their self-identity and personhood
• Use multiple forms of communication (spoken language with
facial expressions) to enhance the meaning of what is being
expressed
• Avoid completing their sentences – rather stop and wait. This
will allow them time to process information and to respond at
their own pace
• Incorporate familiar music and songs into conversations –
music is one area that is often well preserved in people with
dementia. This can provide everyone involved with an
enjoyable activity through which to connect
• Offer the person choices to promote their independence in
daily decision-making.

I hope this will assist you when engaging with people or family members who have dementia.
