In most cases, especially for patients under 38 or those transferring an embryo that's already tested normal, SASREG guidelines recommend transferring a single embryo. It's not about limiting your options. It's about giving you and your future baby the safest path forward.

Twin pregnancies come with real risks, like higher rates of premature delivery, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes. Premature delivery can also mean lifelong challenges for children, including cerebral palsy or autism. Having children one at a time is simply safer.

Double embryo transfer is still common practice here in South Africa, which is part of why twin pregnancies from IVF happen more often than they need to. Choosing a single embryo, when it's the right option for you, is one of the most effective ways to bring that risk down.

Hit pause
High intensity cardio, heavy weights, hot yoga, anything high impact

During stimulation your ovaries are bigger and more vulnerable than usual. After transfer, your body just needs calm and rest.

Gentle movement is actually your friend during this time. It eases anxiety and keeps you feeling like yourself.

Today we are shouting out the people who work quietly behind the scenes to make miracles happen.

Every single IVF baby, every positive test, every family that was built through fertility treatment, has an embryologist at the heart of that story. They are in the lab before the sun comes up, working with a level of skill and precision that most of us cannot even imagine, handling the most precious thing in the world with steady hands and enormous care.

And today, 25 July, we also celebrate the birthday of Louise Brown, the world's very first IVF baby, born in 1978. A baby the world was told could not exist.
Look how far we have come.

Here is something that might make you feel a little less alone though. The emotional experience of the two-week wait is so intense that it actually has its own body of psychological research. Studies describe heightened anxiety, obsessive symptom tracking, broken sleep, and emotional exhaustion as completely normal responses to one of the most uncertain periods of the fertility journey.

You are not overthinking it. You are not being dramatic. You are a human being waiting for news that could change your entire life. Of course it is hard.

A few things that might help get you through:

🤍 Give yourself full permission to feel whatever you feel
🤍 Step away from Dr Google, it never helps, it always spirals
🤍 Lean on the people who get it
