Our advice: test with a purpose, not out of worry.

If you test, you need to be ready to act on the result. Routine testing when there's no problem and you're not trying to conceive can create a lot of unnecessary stress, for you and for those around you.

Testing makes sense when there's a reason: you've been trying to conceive without success, or you have a medical concern. And if you're facing cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, that is the time to look at your options and consider fertility preservation.

It helps to weigh the chances of success with your own eggs against donor eggs, the costs involved, and how you feel about using a donor. Donor conception is not for everyone. Some patients know they would never consider it, while others are more open to the idea, and both are completely valid.

When the chance of success with your own eggs becomes very low, and you and your doctor decide donor eggs would serve you best, that is the time to consider them. There's no rush, and no right answer, only the one that feels right for you.

At a recent fertility congress in Cape Town, a professor joked that instead of a car for her 21st, you should freeze your daughter's eggs. The room laughed, but the message stuck.

Egg quality declines with age, and chances of conceiving with your own eggs fall much lower after 40, and further after 43. That's biology, not anything you did or didn't do. Freezing eggs earlier can preserve the quality they have today.

It's one of the most common worries during stimulation, and a completely understandable one.

During your morning monitoring appointments, your care team uses ultrasounds and bloodwork to estimate how many follicles are growing in your ovaries. But not every follicle holds a mature, retrievable egg. Smaller follicles often contain eggs that are still immature, and these may not release from the follicle wall.

Your doctor will do their best to estimate your egg count ahead of time, but the final number isn't known until after the retrieval procedure itself. A difference between the follicle count and the egg count is normal, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

Dr Maoto carries on to say...
"I think America did the first study where they found that actually more than 50% of women over the age of 30, for the first time in history, actually don't have kids. It is a worrisome stat because of the difficulty of falling pregnant after that age.

It's not just for the women, for the men. I mean, fertility rates have been going down. In fact, we define normal differently now compared to the past, because our parameters, our semen parameters, have actually been going down over time. So already you can see. Yeah, it's tough for the species...."

Finding a partner is harder than it used to be. More of us are having our first baby after 30. And fertility is changing for men too.
