Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia is the most common type of leukemia in adults, yet so many people have never heard of it until it becomes part of their life — or the life of someone they love. A diagnosis can bring a flood of questions that feel impossible to answer alone: What does treatment look like? How do I explain this to my kids? Is it okay to still feel like myself?

On World CLL Day, we want to name something simple: you don't have to carry this alone. Whether you're newly diagnosed, years into watch-and-wait, or supporting someone who is, there are people who understand exactly what you're going through — because they've been there too.

If you're looking for that kind of understanding, our Leukemia Support community on Inspire is here for you.

Indeed a privilege!

Some of the best friendships are forged in the operating theatre.

In recognition of Neurosurgery Month, here’s a shout-out to this incredible colleague after yesterday’s case we had the privilege of doing together. Thank you for your skill, teamwork, and unwavering dedication to our patients. It’s always a pleasure sharing the theatre with you.

Here’s to many more successful cases together. Dr Francois Swart

WHY SHOULD I REGISTER AS AN ORGAN DONOR?

There are several reasons. Registering shows your intent to become a donor and save up to seven lives. Also, it sets a great example for others to follow.

It is the perfect way to start a conversation with your family about organ donation. Discuss your decision with them and make sure they all agree, because without their consent after your death, no donation can take place.

To register, go to www.odf.org.za and complete the short registration form.

Once registered, we will add your details to our official Organ Donor Registry, where they can be accessed by transplant coordinators nationally.

We will also email you an electronic donor pack containing your personalised Organ Donor Card, “stickers”, and information about organ donation.

To register, go to www.odf.org.za and complete the short registration form.

HOW DO DOCTORS KNOW A POTENTIAL DONOR IS REALLY DEAD?

Two separate teams check the donor. The doctors, who are independent of the transplant team, do a long, exhaustive list of tests to determine if the potential donor is really dead. This is standard protocol, here and internationally.

Once they have declared someone brain dead, the person is officially dead. There is no chance of recovery because the body cannot function without the brainstem. This has been conclusively proven. However, the body’s circulatory system can be artificially oxygenated after death to keep the organs viable for transplantation.

It is thanks to this process that organ donation is possible.

To register, go to www.odf.org.za and complete the short registration form.

When doctors take time to rest, recharge, and connect with family and friends, they become better doctors. Caring for themselves helps them show up with greater compassion, energy, and presence for their patients.
