I’m Tania van Zyl, an Occupational Therapist and group facilitator. I run therapeutic groups focused on helping people better understand themselves, navigate emotions, and build healthier relationship patterns in a supportive, structured space.

Recalibrate is an 7-week group designed for people who feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or unsure how to communicate their needs. The group focuses on emotional awareness, patterns in relationships, and building practical skills like boundaries and communication - all within a safe, connected group environment.

📅 Start date: 11 May at 17:00📍 Location: 261 Lois Ave, Newlands, Pretoria💰 Investment: R 2800 for the full 7 weeks

WHY GROWINGSPACE

Growingspace started with a simple idea -
to create a space for growth.

In 2021, that looked like small workshops for tween girls.
One- and two-day spaces where they could connect, reflect, and begin to understand themselves a little better.

But over time, my own work began to shift.

As an occupational therapist, I moved more into mental health -
and I started seeing something consistently.

People are functioning.
They are working, coping, showing up…
but often feeling like life is, at times, just unmanageable.

In my clinical work, I sit daily with individuals who are:
– navigating major life changes
– trying to rebuild parts of their lives
– feeling burnt out, overwhelmed, and exhausted

And it made me realise something important:

We often only create space for growth when things have already fallen apart.

But what if we didn’t wait until that point?

What if there was a space where people could:
– reflect
– understand themselves
– learn new ways of functioning
– and grow

before reaching burnout or breakdown?

That is what Growingspace is becoming.

Not a space only for recovery -
but a space for intentional, preventative growth.

A space to pause, recalibrate, and realign
in how you understand yourself, your work, and your relationships.

Over the past few months I’ve been sharing short reflections on work, capacity, and everyday overwhelm.

Small reminders about things like:
• invisible load
• role strain
• sustainable pace
• how our nervous systems respond when life gets heavy

Because often the problem isn’t motivation , it’s how much we are quietly carrying.

I’ve created a WhatsApp channel called Scattered OT where I share these reflections a few times a week.
Short, thoughtful posts that offer a pause in the middle of busy days.

This morning at Goddess Café in Rietondale we gathered for “Finding Your Rhythm”, and what a privilege it was to share that space.

One truth stood out clearly:
When we think about rhythm, we often focus on responsibilities and schedules but forget to consider our own needs.

Rhythm is shaped by what we value.
By the people who nourish us.
By the places that steady us.
By the activities that restore us.

Getting back to what truly matters isn’t indulgent, it’s preventative.

Thank you to the women who showed up with honesty and openness. Choosing to pause is powerful.
