Early detection of eyelid cancer can protect your sight not just your skin.

Because the eyelids are essential for blinking and protecting the surface of the eye, treatment needs to be both medically precise and structurally careful.

If you have an eyelid lesion that:
• Persists beyond 6 weeks, or
• Repeatedly crusts/bleeds, or
• Changes the eyelid margin/lashes,
it’s worth getting an ophthalmologist’s opinion and consider a biopsy if suggested.

Did you know that cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss worldwide? This Cataract Awareness Month, it’s time to protect your sight by learning the early cataract symptoms you shouldn't ignore.

Cataracts usually develop slowly, meaning your vision can degrade so gradually that you might not even notice it at first. Routine eye care is essential because catching changes early makes management and eventual treatment much safer and more predictable.

Keep an eye out for these common warning signs in yourself or your loved ones:
• Blurry or Cloudy Vision: Feeling like you are constantly looking through a foggy or dirty window.
• Night Driving Struggles: Experiencing increased glare, halos around lights, or poor visibility after dark.
• Faded Colors: Seeing world textures look increasingly yellowed, dull, or less vibrant.

Don't let preventable vision changes take away your independence scheduling a comprehensive eye exam is the best way to keep your eyes healthy.

Eye pain isn’t always "just eye strain."

If it hurts to move your eyes or your vision suddenly looks like a faded photograph, it’s time to pay attention. For 20% of people with Multiple Sclerosis, these symptoms, known as Optic Neuritis, are the very first warning signs.

What’s actually happening?
MS causes your immune system to attack the protective coating (myelin) of your nerves. When it hits the optic nerve, the connection between your eyes and your brain "shorts out."

The signs you shouldn't ignore:
• Achey eyes: Persistent pain, especially when looking up or sideways.
• Faded colors: Reds looking pink, grey, or "washed out."
• The "Fog": Sudden blurring or a dark spot in the center of your vision, usually in just one eye.

The good news? Medical criteria updated in 2024 now allow doctors to use these eye symptoms to diagnose MS much faster than before.

Don't wait for "more symptoms" to show up. If your vision is changing, get it checked. Early action is the best way to protect your long-term health. 🎗️

Here’s a cool eye fact: blue eyes don’t get their colour from pigment the way brown eyes do. 👁️
Instead, the iris has less melanin, so light scatters more and what you see as “blue” is the result of how that light is reflected back out.

That’s why lighting can make the same eyes look completely different from one photo to the next.

Have you ever been told your eyes change colour? Now you know why 👁️

You have an Olympic athlete living in your eye socket.
Your extraocular muscles are built for pure performance. They can move your eyes at speeds of up to 900 degrees per second to track data and scan your environment. They are "all-day" muscles designed for constant movement without fatigue.

When your eyes feel "strained," it’s rarely because the muscles are tired; they’re plenty strong. Usually, it’s a sign of poor alignment, dryness, or digital overstimulation.

Your eyes are a high-performance engine. Are you giving them the right fuel?

It sounds like science fiction, but it’s clinical reality. To stay perfectly clear so you can see, your cornea can’t have blood vessels. Instead, it "breathes" oxygen directly from the atmosphere through your tear film.

This is why sleeping in non-breathable contact lenses is a major risk. When you close your eyes and "seal" them with a lens, you’re effectively suffocating your cornea. This can lead to swelling, infection, and your eye growing "emergency" blood vessels to find air.

Give your eyes a breather tonight. Your corneas will thank you. 💙

Why is the eyelid the most complex "real estate" on the body?

When we talk about skin cancer, we often think of shoulders and backs. But the eyelids account for roughly 5-10% of all skin cancers. From an Oculoplastic perspective, removing a lesion here isn't just about "clearing the cancer;" it’s about reconstructing a masterpiece of functional engineering.

• The eyelid must be thin enough to move 15,000 times a day.
• It must be rigid enough to maintain its shape.
• It must perfectly distribute the tear film to prevent corneal scarring.

This is where surgery meets artistry. If you have a "pearly" bump or a notch in your lid margin that won't go away, don't just see a dermatologist; ensure an Oculoplastic surgeon is in the loop.
