What is HbA1c? 🩸

HbA1c is a blood test that reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months.

When glucose circulates in the bloodstream, some of it attaches to haemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body). The higher your blood sugar levels are over time, the more glucose attaches to the haemoglobin, resulting in a higher HbA1c reading.

Because red blood cells live for approximately 90–120 days, the HbA1c test provides a long-term picture of blood glucose control, unlike a finger-prick glucose test.

Why is this important?
It is an important test that gives an indication of how well your diabetes is managed.

Monitoring HbA1c levels plays a crucial role in preventing long-term diabetic foot complications.
