Sometimes, the people who seem to be doing okay are the ones carrying the heaviest burdens. ๐Ÿ’›

Reach out. Ask how theyโ€™re really doing. Listen without judgement. And remind them that they donโ€™t have to face their struggles alone.

Did you know that lifestyle choices can drastically change the course of viral infections? For individuals living with chronic hepatitis c, smoking is not just a secondary habit โ€” it is a major accelerator of disease progression and substantially increases the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma โ€” the most common form of primary liver cancer. When to***co smoke and chronic HCV combine, they create a compounding inflammatory burden on the liver, raising the stakes for long-term health outcomes.

Take Control of Your Liver Health
* Breaking the smoking habit is one of the most effective ways to protect your liver from accelerated damage.
* Early detection of hepatitis c allows for modern, curative treatments that can stop liver disease in its tracks before severe complications arise.

At Sediba Hope Medical Centre, we provide comprehensive, non-judgmental viral hepatitis screening, decentralized point-of-service care, and holistic support right here in Pretoria.

Navigating patient referrals between primary care and specialized public health facilities can often be complex and time-consuming. At Sediba Hope Medical Centre, we have seen firsthand how digital health tools can bridge this gap.

By leveraging the Vula Mobile app, our clinical team has successfully streamlined communication and linked numerous patients directly to the appropriate specialists and public health facilities.

Digital health innovation is a core pillar of health systems strengthening. We encourage fellow clinicians to integrate Vula into their daily practice to enhance care coordination for our communities.

Let's work together to connect patients to the care they deserve! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿค

The curve tells a story of momentum, one referral at a time ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Since 2014, this line has been built by health professionals submitting referrals, specialists responding and care teams working together to determine the next step in a patientโ€™s care.

Today, it represents more than 3 million referral cases, and it is still rising. Our commitment remains the same: connecting health professionals to help patients get the right care at the right time.

There is an increase in rotavirus cases reported around Pretoria recently. Rotavirus is a highly contagious virus that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, particularly impacting young children, but it can affect anyone.

Prevention and early management are key to keeping our community safe and healthy:
* Wash hands frequently
* Sanitize durfaces
* Stay hydrated
* Seek early care

Letโ€™s keep Pretoria safe and healthy together! ๐Ÿ’™

Our surveillance indicates that the 2026 rotavirus season is underway in South Africa, with a sharp increase in rotavirus cases reported in Pretoria. We encourage parents and caregivers to ensure that their children are vaccinated against rotavirus and to continue breastfeeding infants. Infants and children experiencing diarrhoeal symptoms should be given oral rehydration solution to help prevent dehydration. Enhanced access to rapid, point-of-care diagnostic screening is a game-changer for identifying and managing advanced HIV and opportunistic infections. Without timely screening, critical co-infections and severe immune suppression can easily be missed until it is too late.

At Sediba Hope Medical Centre, we integrate comprehensive, decentralized point-of-care diagnostic services right here in the Tshwane CBD to catch opportunistic diseases early and save lives.

Our Comprehensive Point-of-Care & Clinical Diagnostic Capabilities at SHMC include:
* Real-time testing of HIV, Viral Hepatitis B & C, Syphilis and Tuberculosis.
* Rapid assessment of CD4 counts.
* On-site management of opportunistic conditions.
* A fully equipped diagnostic laboratory.
* Routine metabolic, safety and wellness testing.

By bringing diagnostics directly to the point of care, we are bridging the gap for underserved populations and transforming global recommendations into local, life-saving reality.

Visit us today to get tested!

Two studies presented at the 26thย International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2026) last week show that wider access to diagnostic testing and consistent implementation of screening guidance could each improve the diagnosis of opportunistic infections in people with low CD4 counts. Viral suppression:
โœ… improves health of people living with HIV
โœ… prevents HIV transmission

But UNAIDS data shows that access to treatment and viral load testing still varies by region.

With the newly reaffirmed target of 38 million people living with HIV virally suppressed by 2030, we must ensure treatment and care services are accessible for all in need. https://digitallibrary.un.org/record/4120538?ln=en&v=pdf

International Overdose Awareness Day 2026: 25 Years On, Still Needed

๐ŸŒ Over 500,000 lives are lost globally each year to drug overdoses.

Recent data highlights a critical public health crisis, with opioids accounting for nearly 80% of these tragic deaths. While the highest rates remain in North America and Europe, synthetic drugs are driving sharp increases in South America and Southeast Asia.

Overdose is preventable. We can save lives by implementing proven solutions:
๐Ÿ’Š Distribute life-saving overdose-reversal medication, naloxone, to first responders, families, and communities.
๐Ÿค Improve affordable access to evidence-based addiction treatment and mental health care.
๐Ÿ“ข Reframe substance use as a health issue, making it easier for individuals to reach out for help without fear of judgment.

Today, we commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day and remember lives lost to overdose. An overdose is a medical emergency, acting quickly can save a life. For support, contact the Substance Abuse Helpline on 0800 12 13 14.

Today, South Africa reaches a significant milestone in its HIV prevention response. President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi are officially launching the national rollout of lenacapavir (LEN), the twice-yearly injectable HIV PrEP option, today in Mpumalanga, as part of a phased national rollout.

Selected government clinics across six provinces - Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape โ€“ are to begin offering LEN as an additional HIV prevention choice.

Find a full list of participating facilities herehttps://sahivsoc.org/Files/LEN-FACILITIES-BY-PROVINCE-2-1.pdf, with thanks to Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism for making this available.

Vulnerable key populations will be prioritised.
