Langenhoven het iets van die finaliteit van die dood so raak gevat in hierdie gedig.

DIE TAAL VAN ’N KIS

Daar is ’n geluid
wat ’n mens nooit vergeet nie.

Die gekraak van die masjien,
die stadige gekreun
van metaal wat onder gewig werk.

Maar daardie dag
praat die masjien nie van metaal nie.

Dit praat van finaal.

Elke kraak
sê:
“Hierdie is die einde.”

Elke kreun
sê:
“Jy kan haar nie terugbring nie.”

En terwyl die kis
millimeter vir millimeter sak,
staan jy daar
en wens jy kon die tyd
net vir ’n oomblik terugdraai.

Want ’n mens dink altyd
jy is gereed vir die laaste groet.

Totdat jy daar staan
en besef,

hierdie keer
is daar geen môre
waarin jy weer kan hallo sê nie.

Die toue beweeg.
Die kis sak.

En jou hart skree
terwyl jou mond stilbly.

Nog ’n bietjie laer…

Nog ’n bietjie verder
van jou af.

En daardie ou masjien
gaan aan met sy werk
asof dit net nog ’n dag is.

Maar vir jou
is dit die dag
waarop ’n hele wêreld
stadig onder die grond verdwyn.

Die gekraak praat van afskeid.

Die gekreun praat van verlies.

Die stadig sak
praat van nooit weer.

En wanneer die kis
uiteindelik onder jou oë verdwyn,
bly jy vir ’n oomblik staan,

met blomme in jou hand,
trane op jou wange
en ’n duisend woorde
wat jy wens jy kon nog sê.

Maar die masjien het klaar gepraat.

Finaal.

Die einde.

Die laaste groet.

Today is National Grief Awareness Day.

But what does it actually mean to be aware of grief?

It means understanding that grief doesn't have an expiration date.

It means knowing someone can laugh, go out, take a vacation, celebrate something good, build a new life—and still deeply grieve the person they lost.

It means not assuming that because six months, two years, or ten years have passed, they should be "better by now."

It means understanding that grief doesn't always look like crying. Sometimes it looks like exhaustion. Irritability. Forgetfulness. Turning down plans. Leaving early. Needing people and wanting to be left alone at the exact same time.

It means saying their person's name instead of avoiding it because you're afraid you'll remind them.

They haven't forgotten.

It means listening without trying to fix it.

It means not comparing one person's loss to another person's loss.

And it means making room for the fact that someone can be doing really well and still have a day that completely knocks them down.

That's grief awareness.

National Grief Awareness Day isn't only for those of us who have experienced loss. We don't need a designated day to know grief exists.

Maybe this day matters even more for everyone around us.

Because awareness can change the way we respond to someone who is grieving.

It can make us a little more patient.

A little less likely to judge.

More willing to listen.

More comfortable saying the name of someone who died.

And less likely to put a timeline on something that never had one.

We can't take someone's grief away. But we can get a whole lot better at how we show up for people living with it.

If these words connected with you, you’ll find many more like them in What Remains. It’s a collection of the writings I’ve shared over the years, bringing together reflections on grief, love, loss, and the connections that continue long after someone is gone.

I hope it brings you comfort, understanding, and the reminder that you're not alone.

Can we ever move forward after loss?
Grief literacy training helps individuals, teams, and organisations understand that these questions are a natural part of loss, not a sign of weakness or failure.
