Have you ever felt exhausted even though you have not done much physically?
That feeling may be linked to something called mental load.
Mental load is the invisible work of constantly thinking, planning, remembering, organising, anticipating problems, and carrying responsibilities. It is remembering appointments, keeping track of deadlines, managing household tasks, checking in on loved ones, planning ahead, and mentally juggling dozens of things at once.
Because mental load is often invisible, people may not recognise how draining it can be. Over time, carrying too much mental load can contribute to stress, burnout, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and emotional exhaustion.
The challenge is that mental load does not end when the day ends. It follows us into our evenings, our weekends, and sometimes even our sleep.
Taking care of your mental wellbeing means paying attention not only to what you are doing, but also to everything you are carrying mentally.
Sometimes the most exhausted person in the room is not the busiest. They are the one carrying the heaviest mental load. π
