Have you ever felt exhausted even though you have not done much physically?

That feeling may be linked to something called mental load.

Mental load is the invisible work of constantly thinking, planning, remembering, organising, anticipating problems, and carrying responsibilities. It is remembering appointments, keeping track of deadlines, managing household tasks, checking in on loved ones, planning ahead, and mentally juggling dozens of things at once.

Because mental load is often invisible, people may not recognise how draining it can be. Over time, carrying too much mental load can contribute to stress, burnout, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and emotional exhaustion.

The challenge is that mental load does not end when the day ends. It follows us into our evenings, our weekends, and sometimes even our sleep.

Taking care of your mental wellbeing means paying attention not only to what you are doing, but also to everything you are carrying mentally.

Sometimes the most exhausted person in the room is not the busiest. They are the one carrying the heaviest mental load. πŸ’›

As we celebrate Youth Day, we honour not only South Africa's history, but also the young people who are navigating the realities of today.

We do not always talk enough about the mental and emotional challenges many young people face. Behind the achievements, ambitions, and potential are often struggles that go unseen.

Today's youth are growing up in a world that is more connected than ever, yet many feel isolated. They face academic pressure, uncertainty about the future, financial stress, social media comparisons, relationship challenges, identity exploration, and the expectation to have life figured out long before they realistically can.

The reality is that many young people carry these pressures silently. Some may appear to be coping while battling anxiety, depression, burnout, loneliness, low self-esteem, or overwhelming stress. Too often, they fear being judged, misunderstood, or seen as weak for speaking up.

This Youth Day, let us remember that mental health is not a luxury. It is a fundamental part of wellbeing. Young people deserve spaces where they feel heard, supported, understood, and empowered to seek help when they need it.

To every young person reading this: your wellbeing matters. Your struggles are valid. Your voice deserves to be heard. And you do not have to carry everything on your own. πŸ’šπŸ’™

Today we honour the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the young people who stood up for their rights and helped shape the South Africa we know today.

Youth Day is more than a day of remembrance. It is a reminder of the power young people have to challenge, inspire, and create change. It is also an opportunity to reflect on how we are supporting the next generation, not only academically and professionally, but emotionally and mentally as well.

Young people today face a unique set of challenges, from academic pressure and unemployment to social media, identity development, and navigating an ever-changing world. Their mental health matters just as much as their future opportunities.

As we celebrate Youth Day, let us continue creating spaces where young people feel heard, supported, empowered, and hopeful about the future.

To the youth of South Africa: your voice matters, your wellbeing matters, and your future matters. πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’›πŸ€β€οΈπŸ–€

It is easy to feel like you are falling behind when you compare your journey to everyone else's.

Someone is getting married.
Someone is changing careers.
Someone is buying a house.
Someone seems to have everything figured out.

But life was never meant to be lived according to someone else's timeline.

Growth takes time. Healing takes time. Learning takes time. The seasons of our lives unfold differently, and that is okay.

Your path does not need to look like anyone else's to be meaningful.

Do things at your own pace. Life is not a race. πŸ’™πŸ’š

Mental health is important, not because everyone is struggling, but because everyone is carrying something.

Some people are carrying grief that never fully left.
Some are carrying expectations they can never seem to meet.
Some are carrying old wounds that still shape how they see themselves, others, and the world around them.

The truth is that mental health is not only about diagnoses, crises, or reaching a breaking point. It is about the invisible ways our experiences influence our relationships, our decisions, our confidence, our ability to rest, and even our ability to enjoy the lives we have worked so hard to build.

Many people spend years adapting to stress, anxiety, loneliness, or emotional pain without realising how much energy it takes to keep carrying it.

Mental health matters because the quality of our inner world affects the quality of everything else.

Perhaps the question is not "Am I struggling enough to deserve support?"

Perhaps the question is "How much lighter could life feel if I didn't have to carry this alone?"

Men's Mental Health Month πŸ’™πŸ’š

Mental health challenges affecting men are often hidden behind phrases like "I'm fine", "I'll deal with it", or "I just need to push through."

This article offers important insight into the realities facing men today and why creating spaces for honest conversations is more important than ever.

Take a few minutes to read it, reflect on it, and share it. You never know who might need the reminder that asking for help is not weakness, it is courage.

The societal expectations of how a man should not express their emotions because of culture, a key driver.

What if masculinity included asking for help?

For many men, mental health stigma is not just about fear. It is about the messages they have received throughout their lives: be tough, stay strong, do not cry, do not talk about it.

Research has found that men are less likely to seek mental health support and more likely to experience negative mental health outcomes. In South Africa, approximately 23 per 100 000 people commit su***de. About 80% of men.

Perhaps it is time to redefine what strength looks like.

Strength can be asking difficult questions.
Strength can be having honest conversations.
Strength can be reaching out before things become overwhelming.

Strength can be seeking support.
