You wouldn't expect to return to sport after an injury without rehabilitation—so why expect your body to recover from pregnancy and birth without support? 🤍

Whether you had a natural birth or a C-section, pregnancy places significant demands on your pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, breathing mechanics, posture and muscle strength.

A postpartum pelvic floor assessment isn't just about getting you to do "kegels".
It's about understanding how your body is recovering and helping you return confidently to everyday life and exercise.

🚺Remember: Leaking urine, pelvic heaviness, prolapse and pain are common for some women after pregnancy—but not something you simply have to accept and live with. Aim to have a proper postpartum assessment around 6 weeks after delivery, or book an appointment at any stage, even if your baby is now a toddler or teenager. Start your postpartum rehabilitation journey as soon as you are ready, your future self will thank you, especially if you are planning another pregnancy.

I recently treated a horse rider who had ongoing hip stiffness. She struggled to get on and off her horse and found it difficult to ride at faster paces because her hip felt tight and uncooperative.

She'd focused on stretching and strengthening her hips, but nothing seemed to make a lasting difference.

The missing piece? Her pelvic floor.

After addressing her pelvic floor alongside her hip mobility, she noticed a real improvement in her movement and riding.

If you've tried everything for your hip but you're still stuck, it might be worth looking beyond the hip itself.

Your hips and pelvic floor work as a team.🤝

✨ Every person is different, so a thorough assessment is key.

🚽Constipation isn't always about what you eat.

Healthy bowel habits can make a huge difference—not just for constipation, but for your overall pelvic floor health.

Remember, straining isn't normal. If you're regularly pushing hard, feel like you don't empty completely, struggle to pass stool or suffer with hemorrhoids, your pelvic floor muscles may not be relaxing or functioning properly. This can lead to prolapse or other pelvic floor issues.

A pelvic floor physiotherapist can assess what's really going on and help you find long-term solutions.

📍If you answered "yes" to any of the questions: it's time to go see a Pelvic floor physiotherapist👐🏻

📌If you answered "no" to all the questions: Yay! Your pelvic floor seems to be happy. Keep in mind, there are other symptoms, types of pain or issues that can be related to the pelvic floor too. If you are unsure, a pelvic floor assessment is a valuable and great way to screen for issues.

"Why did you choose pelvic floor physiotherapy?"

It's a question I get asked often.

📢My answer is simple: women's health deserves more conversation, more research and women deserve informed healthcare!

Even from a young age, it bothered me how topics like menstruation, pelvic pain, s*xuality and women's bodies were often treated as subjects to whisper about or simply endure.

Throughout my career, I've seen how many women silently accept pain, bladder leaks, painful periods, painful in*******se and pelvic floor symptoms as "normal" simply because they've been living with them for years or that is what they've been told.

❗️But normal doesn't always mean healthy.

I've always been passionate about advocating for women in a space where I feel their health concerns have not always been heard, prioritised or researched as thoroughly as they should be. Thankfully, women's health research is growing, but there is still work to be done.

‍🎙️I believe women should feel comfortable talking about their bodies.
🔬I believe women deserve answers.
🩺I believe women deserve treatment options.

That is why I do what I do.

Women are often prescribed repeated courses of antibiotics for symptoms that feel like a UTI, yet their symptoms continue or their urine test is negative...
This can be very frustrating.
While true UTI's absolutely need medical treatment, recurrent UTI symptoms without infection can be related to pelvic floor muscle tension, perimenopause, menopause or Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM).

If you've been struggling with burning, urgency, frequency, bladder pressure or pain with intimacy and aren't seeing improvement or getting any answers, a comprehensive pelvic health assessment may help identify what's really contributing to your symptoms.

I bet you've not been told that your C-section scar can lead to any of these problems, even sometimes years later... Women are provided with very little information regarding pelvic floor health, pregnancy prep or the postpartum period - which is absolutely NOT right or fair!

Have your C-section scar and pelvic floor checked after pregnancy to prevent any of these issues or to get information on how to aid in healing and restoration of function.

Never believe that your symptoms are a "normal" part of the postpartum period and to just carry on. Although they are common, there are ways to prevent and treat these problems. Visit a Pelvic floor physiotherapist if you have any concerns or questions.
