🌸 HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY 🌸

“I have finally become proud of being a woman and a surgeon.”
— Dr Karyn Butler

There is something powerful in these words.

For generations, women have often felt they had to choose, between strength and softness, ambition and family, leadership and compassion. But being a woman is not something to overcome in order to succeed.

It is part of our strength.

Today, we celebrate every woman who challenges expectations, opens doors for those who follow, and uses her strength to make a difference.

To the women who heal, lead, nurture and inspire - we see you, we celebrate you, and we honour you. 💙

Happy Women’s Day from Pretoria Eye Institute.

📚👓 Welcome Back to School!

As many South African schools re-open after their winter break, now is the perfect time to set your child up for success, and healthy vision plays a big part in learning. Clear, comfortable vision helps children stay focused, confident, and engaged in the classroom.

One of the easiest ways to reduce digital eye strain is to follow the 20-20-20 rule:
👀 Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. This gives the eye muscles a chance to relax after focusing on screens.

📅 Book your child's comprehensive eye examination at Pretoria Eye Institute today and help them see their best! Healthy eyes support happy learning! 👁️💙

👁️ June is Cataract Awareness Month!

Did you know that cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide, but they're also one of the most treatable?

A cataract occurs when the eye's natural lens becomes cloudy, causing vision to become blurred or dull. Common symptoms include:
🔹 Blurry or cloudy vision
🔹 Difficulty seeing at night
🔹 Increased sensitivity to light and glare
🔹 Colours appearing faded
🔹 Frequent changes in your glasses prescription

The good news? Cataract surgery is a safe, highly successful procedure that can restore clear vision and improve quality of life.

To learn more about cataracts, their symptoms, and treatment options, visit our website: https://www.eyeinstitute.co.za/services/cataract/

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, don't ignore them. Contact the Pretoria Eye Institute to book an eye assessment and let our experienced team help you see clearly again.

Good vision plays a vital role in education, sport, confidence and everyday life, yet many young people live with undiagnosed vision problems.

This week as we celebrate Youth Day, we're encouraging parents, caregivers and young adults to make eye health a priority. Regular eye examinations can identify issues early and help ensure every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Let's continue celebrating and empowering our youth by investing in their future, starting with their vision.

In May, we raise awareness about one of the world’s “silent killers”, hypertension (high blood pressure) and the hidden damage it can cause to your eyes. 👁️❤️

Many people are unaware that uncontrolled hypertension can affect the tiny blood vessels in the retina, leading to a condition called hypertensive retinopathy. Over time, high blood pressure can increase the risk of:
• Blurred or reduced vision
• Retinal bleeding or swelling
• Blocked blood vessels in the eye
• Optic nerve damage
• Increased risk of stroke-related vision loss

The scary part? Eye damage from hypertension can develop quietly, often without symptoms in the early stages.

⚠️ What to look out for:
• Blurry vision
• Headaches with visual changes
• Sudden loss of vision
• Seeing dark spots or double vision

Regular eye examinations can sometimes reveal signs of high blood pressure before other symptoms appear. Your eyes truly can give us a window into your overall health.

Take care of your heart, protect your vision, and know your numbers. 💙
