Health Professions Council of South Africa - HPCSA Protecting the public, and guiding the professions.

The Mission of the HPCSA is: -

To regulate and guide registered healthcare professions and protect the public through:
• Setting contextually relevant standards for healthcare training and practice;
• Setting and maintaining standards for Ethical and Professional practice;
• Strengthening the maintenance of continuing competency programmes;
• Ensuring consistent compliance to all the set standards;
• Continually engaging the public and other stakeholders. The HPCSA is mandated to regulate the health professions in the country in aspects pertaining to education, training and registration, professional conduct and ethical behaviour, ensuring Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and fostering compliance with healthcare standards. In order to safeguard the public and guiding the professions, registration in terms of the Act it is a prerequisite for practising any of the health professions registrable with Council.

HPCSA CONGRATULATES PROFESSOR WEZILE CHITHA ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRINCIPAL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes to Professor Wezile Chitha, HPCSA President, on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Fort Hare, announced on 17 October 2026.

The 2025 hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) outbreak in KwaZulu-Natal highlighted how little we know about the disease in South Africa. Because HFMD is not currently a notifiable condition, there is limited information on how often it occurs, where it spreads and which viruses are circulating.

In Pictures | Advancing Oral Health in Rural Communities

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), through the Professional Board for Dental Assisting, Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene (DOH), is collaborating with the Department of Health, Operation Smile South Africa and other key stakeholders in a three-day National Oral Health Month outreach programme from 13 to 15 October 2026 at Vhembe TVET College in the Vhembe District Municipality, Limpopo.

Held under the theme “No Health without Oral Health”, the initiative aims to improve oral health outcomes, particularly in underserved rural communities, while strengthening healthcare practitioners’ skills and supporting their professional development across the country.
