Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment option that may help reduce chronic pain by targeting specific nerves responsible for sending pain signals.

During the procedure, controlled heat is applied to a small area of nerve tissue to interrupt pain signal transmission. This may help provide relief for patients experiencing ongoing pain, especially when other treatments such as medication or physical therapy have not been effective.

Pain relief can vary from patient to patient, depending on the cause and location of the pain. For some, relief may last several months, while others may experience longer-lasting results. In certain cases, the procedure may need to be repeated over time.

Most patients are able to return home on the same day after the procedure.

At Dr RP Raath Chronic Pain Centre, we focus on helping patients explore treatment options that support better comfort, movement, and quality of life.

Chronic pain is not just pain that lasts longer than expected — it can affect the way the nervous system functions.

When pain continues for weeks, months, or even years, the brain, spinal cord, and nerves may become more sensitive. This can cause pain signals to become amplified, meaning the body may start reacting more strongly to movement, pressure, touch, stress, or even everyday activities.

For many patients, chronic pain can begin to affect more than the painful area. It may influence sleep, mood, energy levels, concentration, mobility, and overall quality of life. Some people may feel exhausted, frustrated, anxious, or limited in their daily routines because their nervous system remains in a heightened state of pain response.

This is why chronic pain should never be dismissed as “just something you have to live with.” Proper pain management looks at the bigger picture — identifying possible causes, understanding how the nervous system is responding, and creating a treatment plan that supports better function, comfort, and quality of life.

At Dr RP Raath Chronic Pain Centre, we focus on helping patients better understand their pain and explore personalised treatment options aimed at improving daily living.

Pain may affect your body, but it does not have to define your life.

Living with chronic pain can make movement feel difficult, but gentle physical activity can play an important role in long term pain management.

Regular movement helps keep joints mobile, supports muscle strength, improves circulation and can also have a positive effect on mood, stress levels and overall wellbeing. Even small, gentle movements can make a difference when done safely and consistently.

The key is to choose activities that suit your body and your condition. Speak to your doctor or physiotherapist before starting any exercise routine, especially if your pain is severe or ongoing.

Suitable options may include walking, swimming, gentle strength exercises, beginner yoga, pilates or chair yoga. Chair yoga is often a good option for people who need a lower impact form of movement, as it allows the body to stretch and strengthen while staying supported.

Movement does not have to be intense to be effective. Sometimes, the goal is simply to keep moving in a way that feels safe, manageable and supportive.

Unless you undergo significant trauma to your spine, like being thrown out of a moving vehicle, the human spine is capable of absorbing a lot of energy without being damaged. By the time we develop chronic pain, our bodies have usually had several decades of wear before the first sign of back pain occurs. If one has neglected routine maintenance for many years, (such as maintaining a healthy weight, diet, and exercise habits) it makes the occurrence of problems like chronic back pain more likely.

Let us manage your chronic back pain.

What is referred pain?
Referred pain is when you feel pain in one area of the body, but the actual source of the problem may be somewhere else.

For example, an issue in the spine, joints, or nerves can cause pain to travel into the arm, leg, shoulder, or another area. This is why the pain you feel is not always where the problem begins.
Understanding the true source of pain is important for choosing the right treatment approach.

At Dr RP Raath Chronic Pain Centre, we focus on identifying the cause of chronic pain and helping patients find a personalised path forward.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. It can affect a variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder, occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own tissues.

Unlike osteoarthritis, which damages the joints through wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation of the joints, resulting in painful swelling that eventually leads to bone erosion and joint deformity.

Rheumatoid arthritis also damages other body parts due to the inflammation it causes. While new types of medications have greatly improved treatment options, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities

Nerve Damage Your spine protects your nervous system, but prolonged compression from back pain can permanently harm your peripheral and spinal nerves.

Damage to Organs Pain in the mid-back along with fever or nausea might indicate a kidney infection, which can lead to severe damage or even kidney failure. Back pain can also signal severe conditions like certain cancers, spinal infections, and osteoarthritis.

Decreased Quality of Life Globally, chronic pain affects one in ten adults each year. Those with chronic back pain often experience a reduced quality of life and are four times more likely to suffer from major depression. Factors such as sleep disruption, inability to enjoy activities, and financial stress due to missed work contribute to this.

Permanent Posture Change Chronic, mild back pain might lead you to frequently slouch for temporary relief, which can alter your spine’s position permanently. This not only exacerbates back pain but also compresses your organs, increasing the risk of arthritis and respiratory issues.

While most back pain doesn’t require surgery, it typically needs medical intervention or a structured recovery plan.
