Over the last decade, the gut microbiome has become one of the most talked-about areas in healthcare. But separating scientific evidence from social media trends isn't always easy.

Here's what we know:
• Your gut bacteria play an essential role in digesting food and producing important nutrients.
• They help train and regulate your immune system.
• Changes in the gut microbiome have been linked to a range of health conditions, although researchers are still working to understand exactly how these relationships work.

Here's what we don't know yet:
• There's no single definition of a "perfect" gut microbiome.
• Not every probiotic works for every person or every condition.
• At-home microbiome tests may offer interesting insights, but current evidence doesn't support using them to make personalised health decisions for most healthy people.

The takeaway? The microbiome is one of the most exciting frontiers in medicine but also one of the most misunderstood.

A significant interventional cardiology milestone was achieved at Life St George’s Hospital with the successful closure of an atrial septal defect (ASD) using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE).

When underlying oesophageal conditions made conventional transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) unsuitable, the clinical team pivoted to an ICE catheter via femoral venous access for real-time visualisation because every moment matters when adapting to complex patient needs.

Performed by Dr. Warren Muller, this milestone highlights the power of combining advanced imaging with minimally invasive structural heart intervention, expanding care where conventional methods are unsuitable. We celebrate this achievement in patient-centred care, where precision and timely clinical decisions change outcomes.

Artificial intelligence is changing healthcare, but maybe not in the way you think.

The question isn't whether AI will replace doctors. It's how AI can help healthcare professionals save critical time and make faster, more informed clinical decisions.

By reducing the time spent on repetitive analysis, AI ensures every moment counts, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on delivering timely, informed patient care.

The future of healthcare is people empowered by technology.

This Organ & Tissue Donor Month, we're reminded that one decision has the power to change many lives.

Organ and tissue donation can offer hope to people waiting for life-saving or life-enhancing transplants. Yet one of the biggest barriers isn't willingness; it's simply not having the conversation.

If you've considered becoming an organ and tissue donor, let your loved ones know your wishes. Having that discussion today can help provide clarity and comfort when it matters most.

Together, we can help raise awareness, inspire informed decisions, and give more people the opportunity for a healthier future.
