[In Pictures] Mamelodi Regional Hospital has successfully performed a hip replacement on a 72-year-old patient who suffered a hip fracture after a fall.

Led by Dr Bafana Nhlapo, Head of Orthopedics, and assisted by Dr Sedzani Nematshema, the procedure aims to relieve pain, restore mobility and help patients regain their independence.

Patients can begin mobilizing as early as the first day after surgery, supported by physiotherapists and walking aids where needed.

The hospital’s Orthopedic team continues to provide specialized care that improves quality of life and supports better outcomes for patients.

[In Pictures] MRH has proudly held its Baby-Friendly status since 2011 and continues to promote breastfeeding awareness every day. As part of this ongoing commitment, the hospital successfully celebrated World Breastfeeding Week from 01–07 August.

The celebration involved the Maternity Unit, including the Paediatric Ward, Neonatal Unit, Postnatal Ward, Labour Ward, Antenatal Clinic, and Dietetics Department. Throughout the week, health education talks were conducted, breastfeeding techniques were demonstrated, and mothers were encouraged and supported in their breastfeeding journey. As a token of appreciation and encouragement, mothers also received gifts of love.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all MRH staff who proudly supported World Breastfeeding Week by wearing their pink breastfeeding T-shirts, demonstrating their commitment to promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding.

Stanza Bopape Community Health Centre successfully hosted the Psychosocial Awareness Disability Campaign 2026 plenary meeting under the theme, "From Institution to Inclusion: The Importance of Community-Based Mental Health Care." The event brought together key stakeholders to promote collaboration, strengthen community-based mental health services, and reaffirm a shared commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for people living with psychosocial disabilities.

[In Pictures] Mamelodi Regional Hospital Performs Major Specialized Eye Surgery to Restore Vision

The Ophthalmology team at Mamelodi Regional Hospital recently performed one of the most advanced and major eye surgeries, a Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV), on a patient's left eye to remove blood that had collected at the back of the eye and was impairing the patient's vision.

The procedure was successfully performed by Ophthalmologist Dr Matlala, who explained that a vitrectomy is carried out when bleeding inside the eye prevents a patient from seeing.

"When blood collects at the back of the eye, we remove it through a small incision using specialized instruments. Once the blood has been cleared, we can examine the retina to identify the cause of the bleeding," said Dr Matlala.

The surgery typically takes between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on the findings during the procedure. Because highly specialized, minimally invasive instruments are used, the incisions are very small and often do not require stitches. Patients generally experience minimal discomfort and recover with very little pain following the surgery.

As one of the major procedures performed in ophthalmology, a Pars Plana Vitrectomy demonstrates Mamelodi Regional Hospital's growing capacity to provide advanced, sight-saving surgical care closer to the communities it serves.

As part of this ongoing initiative, MRH donated clothing to Umkhumbi Place of Safety in Mamelodi. During the visit, the Founder shared the inspiring story of how the charity was established and it's mission to provide a safe, caring environment for vulnerable children.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support this meaningful cause and thank our staff members whose generous clothing donation made this initiative possible. Together, we continue to make a positive impact in our community.
