Otosclerosis is a condition involving abnormal bone remodelling in the ear, most commonly around the stapes, one of the tiny bones responsible for transmitting sound. When the stapes become less mobile, sound cannot travel as efficiently to the inner ear, which can lead to gradual hearing loss.

People with otosclerosis may also experience tinnitus and, less commonly, dizziness or imbalance. The exact cause isn't fully understood, although research suggests that genetics can play an important role.

The good news is that the hearing loss associated with otosclerosis can often be managed. Depending on the individual, options may include hearing aids or assessment for surgery.

Ménière’s disease affects the inner ear and can impact both hearing and balance.

It can cause recurring episodes of vertigo alongside fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, nausea, and a feeling of pressure or fullness in the affected ear. While hearing may improve between attacks, some people can develop permanent hearing loss over time.

What is Auditory Processing Disorder?
