Enabling the How
267. So much sunshine

Planets line danced in a week of positive results, the promise of recovery and moments in the sun enjoying art, music and gin.

If the planets were aligned before, they were doing a line dance last week. Matthew has a lifelong distrust of the medical profession. We know where it comes from and now isn’t the time to go down that rabbit hole.

Suffice to say, a few years ago it took excruciating pain for him to visit a dentist to discover he needed root canal treatment. Not something you can fix with a few Panado and some cloves.

After some convincing Matthew made an appointment with an integrative medical practitioner to get a check up. Much to the relief of his brother, his son and Chantal...

“Walking is man’s best medicine.”

— Hippocrates
(Traditionally attributed to Hippocratic teachings)

🚶 The Moving pillar of emotional fitness reminds us that movement benefits far more than our physical health. Walking can provide space to process emotions, reduce stress, and regulate our emotional responses, helping us build resilience and psychological robustness. Emotional mastery is about understanding, expressing, managing, and regulating our emotions so we can approach life's challenges with greater calm, presence, and confidence. As stress levels decrease, our physical wellbeing, immune system, and relationships often benefit too through improved patience, empathy, and communication.

🌿 Regular movement is a simple but powerful investment in emotional wellbeing. Whether it's a short walk through a park or around your neighbourhood, each step supports both mind and body while reinforcing the healthy habits that contribute to long-term emotional fitness. By making movement part of everyday life, we strengthen our ability to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a balanced, fulfilling life.

🌱 Emotional mastery is about far more than simply feeling happy, it is about understanding, expressing, managing, and regulating emotions in ways that build resilience and psychological robustness. This research suggests that people with stronger emotional intelligence are more likely to respond to challenges with constructive coping strategies, helping them maintain purpose, optimism, and emotional balance. As a result, they are often better equipped to navigate life's ups and downs with greater peace, presence, and confidence.

“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.”

Self-Reliance
Author: Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emotional mastery is the practice of understanding, expressing, managing, and regulating our emotions so we can respond to life's challenges with resilience, presence, and wisdom instead of being controlled by them. As we cultivate this inner stability, we often experience reduced stress, improved physical wellbeing, and stronger relationships built on empathy, authenticity, and thoughtful communication.

🌱 Developing inner peace is an ongoing journey, not a destination reached overnight. The Emotional Mastery for a Better Life course offers practical tools to help you strengthen emotional resilience, deepen self-awareness, and build the habits that support a calmer, healthier, and more fulfilling life, starting from within.

🌿 Nature Weaving

Pillars: Moving • Feeling • Nourishing

Nature Weaving is a simple yet meaningful activity that invites you to slow down, gather fallen grasses, reeds, leaves, or flexible twigs, and create a woven artwork using a handmade frame. There is no perfect design, only the opportunity to engage your senses, move your body gently, and enjoy the creative process. The finished weaving becomes a lasting reminder that resilience is built one small step at a time.

🌱 Emotional fitness is an ongoing journey of deepening self-awareness, becoming more attuned to our bodies, and developing greater comfort with openness and vulnerability. When the weaving doesn't unfold as expected, it offers a safe opportunity to practise adaptability and resilience instead of frustration. Over time, these small moments help us build stronger emotional habits that benefit our mental wellbeing, physical health, and relationships with others.

✨ Every small, intentional practice contributes to stronger emotional fitness. The Emotional Mastery for a Better Life course offers practical tools and activities that can help you deepen self-awareness, strengthen resilience, and build lasting emotional wellbeing, one meaningful step at a time.

When emotions feel overwhelming, what inner quality could help guide your next step?

A simple collection of stones can become a powerful reminder of the qualities we want to strengthen within ourselves.

Try creating a River Stone Compass:
🌿 Collect four to six stones from your garden, a nearby nature area, or a local park.
🌿 Choose a word for each stone that represents an emotional resource you want to cultivate. Perhaps patience, courage, curiosity, compassion, or steadiness.
🌿 Write each word on a stone and keep them somewhere meaningful.
🌿 When facing a difficult moment, hold a stone and reflect:

"What quality do I need to bring to this situation?"

This simple practice supports emotional fitness by helping us slow down, reconnect with ourselves, and create space between an emotional trigger and our response.
💭 The Feeling pillar invites us to tune into our emotions and body sensations with awareness rather than immediately reacting.

💭 The Thinking pillar encourages reflection, curiosity, and the willingness to consider a different perspective or response.

💭 The Nourishing pillar reminds us that emotional wellbeing is supported through small acts of self-care, grounding, and intentional attention.

Sometimes the wisdom we need is already within us. We just need a reminder to reconnect with it.

Enabling the How #265: The soundtrack to our lives

Leah knows what music she likes, so do we. Music is important to us and has a useful lesson to teach too.

“I want mooky, Gaga, mooky please.”

This was Leah’s request when we got in the car to take her home on Thursday. “Mooky” is music. She wanted to listen to music while we travelled. She usually knows exactly what she wants to listen to.

“Not this one,” she said as a song started.

“Not this one,” to the next one too.

And the next. And maybe the next.

She doesn’t have the vocabulary to ask for the song she does want to hear so it is a bit hit and miss...
