⏱️ Why do laboratory and radiology tests sometimes take time?

Different tests follow different pathways:

🧪 Laboratory samples may need to be transported, processed, checked and released.

🩻 Radiology examinations must be completed, the images reviewed and a report prepared.

Your healthcare team then considers these results alongside your symptoms, examination findings and overall clinical picture.

Different tests take different amounts of time. Waiting does not mean nothing is happening.

⚠️ If you feel worse or your condition changes while waiting, please tell the Emergency Centre team immediately.

🫁 Every breath matters.

Breathing difficulty can become critical quickly. Seek emergency help immediately if someone:

⚠️ Cannot speak in full sentences
🔵 Has blue or grey lips or face
💨 Is gasping or working extremely hard to breathe
🔊 Develops sudden noisy breathing or stridor
🚨 Becomes confused, extremely drowsy or collapses

Don’t wait for the symptoms to get worse. Call emergency services or go to the nearest Emergency Centre immediately. 🚑

Rasmed Trauma at Raslouw Private Hospital is available 24/7.

Why do Emergency Centre waiting times change?

The waiting room may appear quiet, but urgent care may be happening behind the scenes. Ambulance arrivals, resuscitations, urgent test results or a patient whose condition suddenly worsens can change clinical priorities without warning.

Patients are assessed and treated according to clinical urgency—not simply in the order they arrived.

If you are waiting and your symptoms worsen, please tell a staff member immediately so that you can be reassessed. Don’t wait silently!

🔴🟠🟡🟢 What do the triage colours mean?

When you arrive at an Emergency Centre, the triage nurse assesses your symptoms, vital signs and clinical risk.

Your triage colour shows how urgently you need medical care. It does not measure how important you are—and patients may not be treated in the order they arrived.

🔴 Red: Emergency—immediate care is required.
🟠 Orange: Very urgent—rapid medical attention is required.
🟡 Yellow: Urgent—medical attention is needed.
🟢 Green: Less urgent—clinically stable at triage and may wait while higher-risk patients receive care.

Your condition can change. If you develop new symptoms or feel worse while waiting, please tell the triage nurse immediately so that you can be reassessed.

Save this guide and share it with someone who may need it.

Happy International Nurses Day 2026! 🌍❤️

To every nurse-

You are the heartbeat of healthcare.

You triage in seconds what others take minutes to understand.
You stay calm when the resus room is full.
You hold space for patients and families when the world feels like it’s falling apart.

From Gauteng’s busiest trauma units to rural district hospitals — we see you. We honour you. We thank you.
