Our blue Bantam bakkie may be old, but it has never let us down. It carries more than just kilos on the clock - it carries stories, hope, and the heart of Breede River Hospice.

This bakkie has been with us through ups and downs. It has driven long distances to reach our patients in McGregor, Agterkliphoogte, and La Chasseur or to collect donations for shops and patients. It has been part of our hospice family for 17 years, getting our Palliative Care Nurse, Sr Sharon, to those who need her most. Although it has a massive 243 973 kms on the clock, it is still going strong.

Then came the floods in May 2026. Part of the Breede River Bridge, our access to McGregor, was washed away. Suddenly reaching our patients felt impossible.

But where there is a will, there is a way - and there was our bakkie.

We parked the bakkie on the other side of the broken bridge, climbed the temporary steps that were put in place, and walked across. On the other side, the bakkie was waiting to take Sr Sharon the rest of the way to her patients.

It wasn’t easy. The steps were slippery in the rain, and the ladder was steep at first. But no weather, no broken bridge, and no challenge have ever stopped us from making sure our patients are cared for.

Working for Breede River Hospice means showing up, no matter what. And our faithful blue bakkie helps us do exactly that - bringing comfort, care, and continuity of support to every patient, every time.

Our Bakkie is old, but it still has so much life and purpose left in it.

🌟 Ware vriendskap maak 'n verskil 🌟

Happy Friendship Day!

Honour Madiba's legacy this Mandela Day! ✨

Nelson Mandela believed that "everyone can make a difference," no matter their means . Following his example, here’s what you can do for Breede River Hospice on 18 July:

✨ Give 67 minutes of your time. Volunteers are the heart of the Hospice . Help in our charity shops, offer administrative support, or assist with maintenance or gardening .

❤️ Donate essential items. Drop off quality second-hand clothing, linen, books, or household goods at our shops.

🤝 Make a financial contribution. Like the R670-for-67-minutes initiative, every rand helps sustain our specialised palliative care services .

📞 Get in touch with Priscilla on 066 473 7866 or [email protected] .

As Madiba taught us: your 67 minutes can start a habit of kindness that lasts all year.

This July, for Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re talking about something close to our hearts at Breede River Hospice: how gentle, meaningful activities can support mental well-being when life feels heavy.

When you or a loved one is living with a life-limiting illness, “hobbies” can sound impossible. Fatigue, pain, or grief may make old passions feel out of reach.

But mental health doesn’t always need big actions.

Sometimes it lives in tiny, kind moments
🌸 Listening to a favourite song from younger years
🌸 Folding soft laundry while sitting down
🌸 Watching birds
🌸 Writing one sentence in a notebook
🌸 Holding a cool cloth or a smooth stone
🌸 Looking through old photos with a friend or relative

These are not cures. But they are small anchors – ways to feel human, present, and connected when everything else feels uncertain.

At Breede River Hospice, we care for your mind as much as your body. Our team help patients and families find gentle, realistic ways to protect their mental health during serious illness.

💚 If you are struggling with fear, sadness, or numbness – you are not weak. You are human. And we are here.

This July, we're not just celebrating 10 years of the BRAM Care Centre—we're celebrating what happens when a community refuses to look away.

It started in 1999, when Kayce Meulenbroek discovered that "home" for a terminally ill patient was under a bridge. From an eight-bed building with "hardly space for a mouse" to a beacon of dignity behind the factories, with the Langeberg Mountains watching over us—we've come so far. 🌄

And now, on 3 July 2026, the The Department of Health and Wellness honours Nelson Mandela Day by giving back even more. They literally transformed our outdoor area and created this beautiful welcoming space—filled with comfort, care, and hope for everyone who walks through our doors. 🌸

We are so grateful and want to thank each and everyone for their support, not just today but over the last 10 years.

Happy 10th Birthday to the BRAM Care Centre! 🎉🎂

A decade of compassion, care, and community. From our humble beginnings, we have grown into a place of hope—providing 24-hour nursing support, rehabilitation, and comprehensive care for up to 15 patients at a time.

As an NPO intermediate care facility assisting the Langeberg Sub-district, we have walked alongside countless patients and families, offering not just medical care, but dignity, comfort, and peace.

This incredible journey would not have been possible without:

Our Dedicated Team – your unwavering commitment is the heart of everything we do.
Our Community – thank you for your donations, volunteering, and unwavering support over the years.
Our Patients – you are the reason we exist.

Thank you for trusting us with your care.

🇿🇦 This Mandela Day, let's make our next decade even brighter!

In honour of Nelson Mandela's legacy, you are invited to join us on Friday, 3 July 2026, as we spend our 67 minutes making a difference.

Together, we will transform our outdoor garden porch into a more therapeutic, peaceful, and welcoming environment for patients and their families—a space filled with care, hope, and healing.

How you can help:
🌱 Donate – cash contributions will go towards flowering plants, outdoor furniture, and decorations.
🤝 Join us – come lend a hand on the day.
📢 Share – spread the word with your teams and networks.

"It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it." – Nelson Mandela

Let's make these 67 minutes count—together, we can do more. ❤️
