The Guilt of Single Mothers: Never Feeling Good Enough

Many single mothers carry a burden that few people ever notice—guilt.
Guilt for working long hours because the bills have to be paid. Guilt for missing a school event. Guilt for feeling tired at the end of the day. Guilt for losing patience. Even guilt for taking a few moments to care for themselves.
Over time, these quiet thoughts can become a constant companion, leaving many women wondering whether they are doing enough for their children. The truth is that children do not need perfect mothers. They need mothers who love them, who are present, who listen, and who continue showing up each day, even when life feels overwhelming. Love, consistency, and emotional connection will always matter more than perfection.

This Women's Month, I want every single mother to remember that your worth is not measured by how much you do, but by the love and commitment you give every single day. Be gentle with yourself. You are doing far better than you may believe.

Behind every strong single mother is a story that few people ever see.

We often admire single mothers for their resilience, determination, and unwavering love for their children. What we don't always see are the countless sacrifices made behind closed doors. We don't see the sleepless nights spent worrying about finances, the endless mental checklist of responsibilities, or the emotional weight of making every important decision alone. We don't see the moments when exhaustion quietly replaces energy, yet somehow they still find the strength to comfort a child, prepare another meal, and begin the next morning again.

This Women's Month, let us celebrate more than the strength of single mothers. Let us recognise their courage, acknowledge their challenges, and remind them that they deserve the same compassion they so freely give to everyone else. True strength is not about carrying every burden alone—it is also about knowing when to reach out for support.

💙 I explore these hidden challenges in my latest blog article, The Hidden Challenges of Being a Single Mother: You're Carrying More Than People See.

Women's Day reminds us that women have not only shaped our nation's history but also continue to make an extraordinary contribution to their families, workplaces, communities, and the South African economy. This special day is not only about honoring the remarkable women who came before us—it is also about celebrating you. Yet to continue caring for others, you first need to care for yourself. Your mental health is not a luxury; it is the foundation that allows you to keep giving your best.
Too often, women become so accustomed to putting everyone else's needs first that they overlook their own emotional wellbeing. Stress, anxiety, burnout, and emotional exhaustion rarely happen overnight—they quietly build until simply getting through the day feels overwhelming. This Women's Month, I invite you to pause and ask yourself one important question: Who is taking care of me? Looking after your emotional health is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and those who depend on you.
If this message resonates with you, I warmly invite you to read my latest blog, "A Time to Shine a Light on Your Mental Health," where I explore why women so often neglect their own emotional needs and how small changes can make a meaningful difference.

"What if I'm just overreacting?"

It's one of the most common things people tell themselves when anxiety starts taking hold.

The truth is that anxiety isn't always obvious. Sometimes it looks like overthinking, irritability, trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, or constantly expecting the worst.

Our latest blog unpacks the signs of anxiety, why it happens, and when it may be time to seek support.
