Rock, paper, scissors… avoid your feelings. ✊✋✌️

Look, we’re not saying a deep clean, a motivational podcast, or sending your partner 17 reels about emotional unavailability can’t feel therapeutic.

And yes, we love a good psychology podcast, an Instagram reel that feels suspiciously personal, and a little ChatGPT analysis as much as the next person. 😂

We’re just saying there might be a more effective way to deal with things.

Because unfortunately, understanding your patterns and actually doing something about them are two very different things.

Self-awareness without action doesn’t automatically count as healing.

Rude, we know.

And yes, you can absolutely talk to ChatGPT. We’d just recommend talking to an actual human sometimes too.

Anyway, thanks for playing. See you in therapy. 🫶

Which round felt a little too personal?

If you’re new here, hi! 👋

We’re Psych Central.

A team of psychologists and mental health professionals who believe therapy can be professional, evidence-informed and meaningful without feeling cold, intimidating or unnecessarily complicated.

We like beautiful offices, good conversations, a little humour and asking questions that sometimes make people stare at us for a moment before saying, “Well, I hadn’t thought about it like that.” 🫠

Around here, we talk about anxiety, relationships, boundaries, trauma, emotional wellbeing and all the wonderfully complicated things that come with being human.

But we also believe that mental health is about more than recognising yourself in an Instagram post.

Sometimes the real work happens when you have a space to explore your patterns, understand your experiences and begin doing things differently.

That’s where our team comes in.

Whether you’ve been in therapy before, you’re considering it for the first time, or you’re simply here because our posts keep calling you out a little too accurately — welcome.

We’re glad you found us. 🤍

Ever tried having an honest conversation with someone and somehow ended up defending your tone, your timing, your facial expression and possibly your entire character? 🫠

Congratulations. You may have just met a defence mechanism.

The thing about defence mechanisms is that they’re actually quite clever. They’re our mind’s way of protecting us from feelings that are difficult to tolerate, like shame, guilt, vulnerability or the possibility that we might have got something wrong.

And sometimes, they’re so good at their job that they protect us from the very conversations we need to have.

We deflect.
We explain.
We intellectualise.
We make jokes.
We bring up something the other person did in 2019.

Anything to avoid sitting with the uncomfortable possibility that someone might have a point.

But here’s the slightly inconvenient part: we all do this.

Yes, even the emotionally intelligent ones. Even the ones who’ve been to therapy. Even the psychologists. 🙃

Having defence mechanisms doesn’t make you manipulative, toxic or a terrible communicator. It makes you human.

But when protecting ourselves becomes more important than understanding each other, connection becomes difficult.

Sometimes emotional maturity sounds less like a perfectly constructed argument and more like:

“I’m getting defensive. Give me a moment. I actually want to hear what you’re saying.”

And that, ironically, takes a whole lot more strength than winning the argument.

A little question for your next difficult conversation: Am I trying to understand, or am I trying to protect myself from being wrong?

Uncomfortable question. Very useful one.

Well, this is awkward. 🙃

As a psychologist, I spend a fair amount of time talking about boundaries, rest, being intentional with social media and not feeling the need to be constantly available.

So, naturally, I schedule our content in advance and try to spend a little less time scrolling.

Fast-forward to Saturday night. I open Instagram.

World. Mental. Health. Day.

Oh.

The irony of being a psychologist who forgot World Mental Health Day because she was trying to have healthier boundaries with social media is really something. 😂

But perhaps that’s a pretty good reminder in itself.

We can care deeply about things and still miss them. We can advocate for mental health and still have messy, imperfect, very human moments.

And we don’t need to turn every little oversight into another reason to be hard on ourselves.

World Mental Health Day matters. The awareness, conversations, advocacy and access to care matter enormously.

But none of that should exist only on 10 October.

So here’s to taking mental health seriously without taking ourselves quite so seriously.

Happy World Mental Health Day.

A little late to the Instagram party, but very much here for the conversation. 🤍

Some things we wish more couples knew 🤍

Feeling disconnected sometimes doesn’t mean you have a bad relationship.

Conflict doesn’t always mean something is broken.

Your partner can love you deeply and still misunderstand you.

You can be a great team and still need to work on being lovers, friends and partners too.

And you don’t have to wait until things feel really difficult before you start paying attention to your relationship.

Relationships move through seasons. Life gets busy. We fall into patterns. We miss each other sometimes.

What matters is learning how to notice the distance — and finding ways to turn back towards each other again.

A strong relationship isn’t one that never struggles.

It’s one where you keep making space to find each other again. 🤍

Not everything needs a final conversation, a perfect explanation, or one last attempt to make someone understand.

Sometimes closure looks less like getting answers — and more like deciding you’re done asking. 🤍

Distance can be an answer too.

Anxiety loves a little routine.

Check again.
Ask again.
Google again.
Replay it again.
Avoid it again.

And every time you get that tiny bit of relief, anxiety learns:
“Great. We definitely needed to do that.”

That’s how the cycle gets stronger.

Sometimes getting better means doing less of what anxiety is asking for — and learning that uncertainty, discomfort and not knowing are survivable.

Not every request for connection sounds like, “I need you.” 🤍

Sometimes it sounds like:

“Look at this.”
“You’ll never believe what happened today.”
“Remember when we…?”
“Are you okay?”
“We never do anything anymore.”

And sometimes it doesn’t sound like anything at all — it’s a hand reaching for yours, feet finding your lap on the couch, or moving a little closer in bed.

These small moments can be easy to miss, especially when life is busy.

But often, underneath them is a simple invitation:

Come a little closer.
Notice me.

Connection is built when we learn to notice — and respond to — these little invitations to turn towards each other. 🤍
