A period should never be a source of shame.

In 2019, 14-year-old Jackline Chepng’eno’s story brought painful attention to the harm menstrual stigma can cause. She was reportedly publicly shamed by a teacher after staining her school uniform during her first period.

Although Jackline’s story was reported in the press in 2019, we must do everything we can to ensure that no other young person experiences this kind of humiliation and emotional distress.

Menstruation is a normal part of growing up. A stained uniform should be met with understanding, not humiliation. A girl should feel safe asking for help, not afraid of being laughed at or shamed.

It’s a chronic condition that affects millions of women and girls, yet many still grow up believing that severe pain, heavy bleeding, or pain that disrupts everyday life is simply something they have to endure.

There are moments that stay with you. A handwritten “thank you” from a girl whose life has been touched in some small way is one of them. 💜

The hidden connection between period poverty, transactional s*x and teenage pregnancy isn’t a straight line.

Period poverty does not cause teenage pregnancy.

But when girls living in poverty struggle to meet basic needs—including menstrual products—they may become more economically dependent on others.

In some situations, that vulnerability can increase exposure to transactional s*x or s*xual exploitation. When power imbalances limit a girl’s ability to negotiate safer s*x, the risk of unintended pregnancy can increase.

That’s the connection: not cause and effect, but overlapping vulnerabilities.

And it means prevention has to go beyond talking about pregnancy.

It means addressing poverty, menstrual health, safety, education and access to reproductive health services before vulnerability becomes crisis.

Period-friendly spaces start with conversations, understanding, and access. 💜

At Kwa Watoto Center & School in Soweto, 90 girls and 69 boys came together to learn, ask questions, and challenge the stigma around menstruation.

With 90 reusable sanitary kits distributed, the conversation went beyond menstrual products. It was about dignity, sustainability, and creating a school environment where menstruation is normal, not something to hide.

And we believe boys have a role to play too. Educated boys don’t tease. They support.

It doesn’t simply disappear.

In places where safe menstrual waste disposal isn’t available, used pads can be burned in open pits or discarded in latrines — creating risks for people, communities and the environment.

And the problem doesn’t stop with waste.

Disposable pads also mean a recurring cost for families, while the people handling waste can face difficult working conditions, often without the protective equipment they need.

This is why reusable menstrual products matter.
