Movement, vision & posture, they’re all connected 🧠✨
The vestibular–ocular–postural neural pathway describes the way our balance system, eyes and postural muscles work together to help us stay stable and visually focused while our body is moving.
For a school-going child, this integration is incredibly important. It sets the foundation for a child to sit at a table, look up at the board or glance back to the page to continue reading, or perhaps decipher a maths sum.
For a little one too, learning to roll, crawl or walk.
It helps a child to:
✨Keep their eyes steady while their head and body move
✨Maintain an upright, stable posture at a desk
✨Track across a page when reading
✨Shift their gaze between the board and their book
✨Coordinate their eyes and body during ball games and playground activities
✨Develop the postural control needed for fine motor tasks such as handwriting
✨Move through their environment with greater confidence and efficiency
This is why movement-based activities are such an important part of development.
When children climb, balance, swing, reach and move through different positions, we aren’t simply working on “gross motor skills” — we’re helping the brain integrate movement, vision and postural control.
Strong foundations support higher-level learning 🌱
At Innova OT, we love creating opportunities for children to learn through movement, play and meaningful sensory experiences.
