School holidays are often expected to feel relaxing. However, for many children (and adults), they can feel unexpectedly overwhelming.

Changes in routine, increased sensory input, more social interaction, and reduced structure can all contribute to dysregulation and fatigue.

These responses are not a sign of poor behaviour or lack of coping. But they do reflect how important predictability, structure, and supportive environments are for regulation.

Understanding this allows caregivers to respond with greater flexibility, planning, and compassion.

Masking refers to the effort many neurodivergent people make to hide natural behaviours in order to fit social expectations. While it may help individuals navigate social situations, masking often requires significant effort and can lead to exhaustion and burnout.

For many families and individuals, the topic of diagnosis can feel complicated.

Some people worry that a diagnosis may place a label on the person, especially a child. Others feel relief at finally having an explanation for experiences that may have been confusing or misunderstood.

A diagnosis does not define a person. Instead, it can provide a framework for understanding patterns of strengths, differences, and support needs. In many cases, a diagnosis can also help individuals access appropriate supports, accommodations, and communities of understanding.

This is especially true for schools and workplaces, where a diagnosis is often the key that unlocks additional environmental adaptations and support.

Ultimately, the value of a diagnosis lies not in the label itself, but in the understanding and support that it can make possible.

We often hear questions like "What is neurodiversity?" and "aren't we all a little bit neurodiverse anyway?"

Neurodiversity is the idea that differences in how our brains work are a natural part of human variation. Conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia reflect different ways of processing information, learning, and interacting with the world.

A neurodiversity-affirming approach does not ignore challenges. Instead, it recognises that difficulties often arise when there is a mismatch between a person’s needs and their environment.

While you may recognise some neurodivergent traits in yourself or others, it is important b to remember that neurodivergence involves consistent patterns that meaningfully affect everyday functioning, which is why appropriate understanding and support is so important.

Shifting the conversation from “what is wrong?” to “what support helps this person thrive?” allows for more meaningful understanding of the individual and their current mere. In doing so, clients are able to participate more authentically across their environment, supporting their socio-emotional well being.
